Too many difficulities and not enough time to devote an entire weekend to WP

WordPress.com is much too cumbersome and not user-friendly enough for me. I have been trying to use one of the free templates and change the background image for the last 3 days. Perhaps I’m just challenged, but I have had problems in the past. Obviously if one is not paying for WordPress.org, they are inconsequential.

web stuff can be frustrating – no question; ask me how I know!I’ve been working with web sites for about 3 yrs and WordPress for about 2 yrs and – like you – once in a while I’ll sit down to do a 10 min project and 3 hrs later I’ll be glad my window has a screen on it so I can’t just toss my computer out of it.
Hang in there and cheers!

This blog is devoid of any blogger created content http://hudsongal.wordpress.com/
You must mean this one http://conniewinston.wordpress.com/
Appearance > Background http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-backgrounds/If you have not purchased the custom design upgrade note that no changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side) will be visible to visitors.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/You do not need to load the design tools unless you have the Custom Design upgrade. All of these functions can be accessed from your dashboard – without loading the custom design tools – no upgrade required.
Appearance > Header
Appearance > Background
Appearance > Theme Options (applicable only to some themes)
Settings > Reading (set a static front page)
Site Title and Tagline > Settings > GeneralIf you are using the preview mode for the Custom Design upgrade some of the settings in that mode will save but they won’t show up on the front end unless you purchase the upgrade.
To go back to the free options, go to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Colors and click the “exit the preview” link in yellow at the top of the panel on the right.

My response to that is that’s not true but lots of folks say that and I LOL when they do. I have upgrades and there is no upgrade one can purchase that changes the basics one iota. You don’t have a CSS upgrade as far as I can tell and I see you now have a background image. http://conniewinston.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/2013-10-05-16-07-442.jpg

ADVICE: Your priority ought to be content creation not appearance.

If you expect to become a competent web designer in a weekend then yes, you are destined to failure. You can, however, learn to blog successfully in less than an afternoon: I used to teach homeless people to blog all the time! Start with http://learn.wordpress.com, choose one of the 200 or so themes designed by a professional web designer, and later, when your CSS coding skills are up to par, try Custom Design.

Many thanks to all who responded to this poor damsel in distress.
Good advice and well taken.
