Too many themes?

I just got a popup questionnaire asking: does WP offer too many themes?
Is there any precedent for WordPress ending support for a theme, forcing your blog to look different?
My blog would not even make sense if one of its key features, unique (more or less) to the White as Milk theme, was dropped.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

From time to time old themes that no longer support WordPress.com features are retired. That will always be the case. I searched and located these responses from Staff with regard to retired themes like Connections:

@timethief … Thanks. Interesting. I didn’t know White as Milk was “retired” (WHY is it retired? … but that’s another question), but I was beginning to suspect something, since it was not evolving in any way.
Are you saying that, since this is a long-established blog with a lot invested in the theme it uses, it will always be available to me?
If the answer to that question is No, what can/should I do to get the essential feature(s) I that need (however primitive the whole thing may look to those who decide that this is a theme to be dropped)??

Thanks. Have done so and hope they will take a look. I have a lot invested in this particular theme — no other off-the-peg theme that I have seen (and like) offers one particular feature that this one has. So it would be good to know it will be passively supported for existing users.

When we retire a theme, existing blogs running that theme are generally unaffected and can continue to use the retired theme (though I cannot promise this will always be the case in the future, as an older theme may stop being compatible in some way).

Yes there is, and it had nothing to do with supported or unsupported features: it was an act of unbelievable pettiness (and total disrespect to some hundred thousand users). See this post of mine:
