too many views from one referrer

  • Unknown's avatar

i got too many views from one referrer one day (10th nov).
    the referrer is:
    http://my7.statcounter.com/project/standard/camefrom_activity.php?project_id=2594058

    i don’t have a statcounter account myself.
the top post that day was apost where i reviewed a site where you can create website thumbnails of over 1000 sizes for free.
    http://shongjog.wordpress.com/2007/11/10/how-to-generate-thumbnails-of-any-website-in-over-1000-sizes/

right after the crazy stats thing, a message was added in the thumbnail(hosted by that site) in that post – regarding an information i have in that post on how to do a workaround for a limitation they have.

my question is, did the website view my post to scan for details over and over again, so that they could perform the stealth operation?

i didn’t break their tos by posting the thumbnail.
i’m a bit flabbergasted. wondering if that site is any good. :(

Great, makes it even easier for plagiarists and scrapers and sploggers to grab material. I’m so enthused.

    letters,
    thanks for your response! :D
but i’m sorry to say that your point is lost on me! :(
what are you hinting at EXACTLY? is it pertinent to the problem mentioned above? or is it just a general observation about the possibility of new scopes for sploggers?

It’s hardly a stealth operation of the image in question was hosted on their site and the addition gave useful information. It was someone on staff seeing what you wrote and making a response to it. If the fact that they altered your thumbnail bothers you, use a different site. There might be a blog post in the issue, if you want to talk about who owns an image. Review their TOS first, though. Could be you consented without knowing it.

ok, i am giving up on this.
it seems there is no way to know why i got 82 views from statcounter for a single post in one day.

and i hate that site i reviewed. too many tantrums to deal with. i use a different service on a regular basis anyway. :D

    thanks for your response, rain!

Maybe someone’s statcounter was made public and their visitors saw your name and clicked it?

  • Unknown's avatar

    hi mmslo! :D

    could be.
i have no idea about statcounter! :(

As far as I know, they’re ALL public. You put a little button on your blog and anyone can click on it and see your stats, including referrers. If that site is hugely popular, it’s possible a lot of people did that and got to you, because you’re listed as a referrer.

    /nod to rain
I’ve been using active meter for quite some time, and I’ve had referrals from them in the past.

  • Unknown's avatar

If you use a “sitemeter” you have the option of making your stats public or private.

  • Unknown's avatar

I use statcounter (alongside the wordpress counter – means I can better qualify the hits I am getting, and I get a lot more info about where hits are coming from with it), and you have the option whether your stats are private or public. (fwiw)

    thanks folks!

i learned stuff about different stats services that i didn’t know before. :D

You’re welcome. Two things we thing sthat we did not say because perhaps we presumed too much are:
    (1) previous to registering and agreeing to install any kind of a free tracking “feature” the first thing to do is to examine all the advertising on the 3rd party site offering you the free service;
    (2) the second thing to do is to read the privacy policy very carefully, more than once; and
    (3) the third thing to be mindful of is that nothing is actually “free” the cost is usually providing advertisers with an opportunity to track your visitors too.
