Too much spam

What is the story about all the filthy porn spam lately? It used to be 2 or 3 but toay I had 45? It’s awful.

I’m seeing it too, but it is being caught by Akismet, so there isn’t a problem. You can’t stop spam, or choose only to receive G rated spam, all you can do is hope Akismet catches the bulk of it, in I have only had 2 get through (not porn) in the past several months, and that is a very good record considering I’m getting nearly a hundred a day show up in the spam filter.

I’m a mod at a forum which is also protected by Askimet, and I get to see the spam that’s captured. There’s been a new trend in recent weeks, besides seeing more spam than before. Most spam comments used to be just a few lines long, usually porn links. Now a typical spam comment is more than a full screen of such material. If I didn’t frequently delete it, the spam file would soon dwarf the forum file.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah I’ve noticed that too. The spammers are always changing tactics.

  • Unknown's avatar

I check my spam in case anything slipped in but never open this trash, but it IS horrible to even read the titles.

I would hope there is help coming soon from Akismet or somewhere. It is just impossible to go through 40-50 pages worth of spam on weekly basis, sometime even more. The third party extension (Duct tape) no longer works with new updated WordPress, and it is extremely time-wasting effort to scroll down lengthy spam comments in order to delete.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I miss the script as well. But I check my spam filter pretty regularly to avoid a lot og pages

Akismet’s job is to stop the spam. That is what it is doing. Blame the spammers for the increase in spam. As long as Akismet is catching them, then although inconvenient to go through a bunch of pages, be thankful they are not ending up on your blog.

One suggestion is you can go to settings > discussion and make sure that under “comment moderation” that “Don’t discard spam on old posts” is NOT checked. With things set like that Akismet will automatically delete spam on older posts. Of course if there are any legitimate comments on older posts that get caught accidentally by Akismet they will go bye-bye with the spam.

  • Folks, before you report false positives (or conclude that Akismet has incorrectly caught legitimate comments as spam), please read this:

    It really is spam

At a quick glance, many of the supposed false positives reported by some of the users on this thread are in fact 100% genuine spam.

That doesn’t change the fact that spammers are spamming more, or that Akismet is catching them. But it does mean that Akismet is probably a lot less likely to incorrectly catch legitimate comments than you think. Using the ‘discard spam on old posts’ feature is safer than you think. Deleting all the spam in your spam folder is safer than you think.

I thought I was going crazy- it’s been nothing but 10-30 spam comments a day for the last week. Is Word Press aware of this mew problem?

  • randyallgaier, we also run Akismet, so yes, we know all about spam.

It looks like Akismet is catching almost all of the spam on your blogs.

As far as I can tell, the issue isn’t how effectively Akismet is handling the spam, the issue is how effectively are we managing the spam queue from the front end. The third party duct tape solution was a very simple and nice idea: the lengthy spam comments were collapsed and grouped by default making it easy to scroll through, browse and delete.

We have seen enough development from wordpress for long time, but I have not seen any development from Akismet for wordpress.com users. As of now, I almost always have 40 plus pages of spam to go through which is something I can’t afford my time on. It was an easy and quick job with third party greasemonkey script (no longer working after the upgrade).

  • ismailimail,

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Akismet is continually improved to make it more accurate at detecting spam (and in particular, at not catching real comments as spam).

The new WordPress UI included a number of improvements to the Akismet spam page such as the bulk action tools (checkbox and Bulk Delete) and hover quick actions.

    Tellyworth,

I appreciate you looking at the effectiveess of the spam on my site. But today alone I had took 70 comments that were sexual splam that had NOT been caught and were not in the spam folder. I took them all moved them to the spam folder – hoping that by doing that-it might help build the library of spam addresses. After that I deleted them.

I don’t mind having to do that, but my email inbox is filling up with “New Comment on your post”… emails I want to be emailed when I get a comment- I like to respond to them as soon as possible, but I also don’t want my in-box fillesd with these emails either

I’ve been ignoring my page for awhile and didn’t activate akismet until today. I now have over 29,000 spam and the page doesn’t even load for me to delet them. Is there a way I can just empty the comment folder? I don’t care if I lose any real comment. This is ridiculous!! Thanks a lot!!!

  • nguyen243, if the blog you’re referring to is a WordPress.org blog, please ask at http://wordpress.org/support/

  • Unknown's avatar

    G’da nguyen243
If you are referring to free software downloaded from wordpress.ORG and installed on your own web hosted domain then the correct support forum for you to post to is at at http://wordpress.ORG/support

But if you are referring to a free hosted wordpress.COM blog then this is the correct forum to post to.

For clarification please read this https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

@nguyen243, you say you “activated” akismet, and here at wordpress.COM, we cannot activate or deactivate akismet. It is on all the time whether we want it or not.

I’ve been ignoring my page for awhile and didn’t activate akismet until today.

Is what you mean is that you did not look at the spam akismet had caught until today?

One thing you might look at, if you are talking about the blog linked to your username, is to go to settings > discussion and under “Comment Moderation” make sure that “Don’t discard spam on old posts” is NOT selected. If it is, then deselecting it may actually get rid of a bunch of the spam that you now have. Make sure and click “save changes” at the bottom of the page.
