Toolbar option problems, CSS
-
I like to use the quote marks on the toolbar, and you have a new horizontal bar I also would like to use, but both of these are so very very light they barely show up on the post and I would like them not black but a darker gray. i do not know how to change them. For a horizontal line, I was cutting and pasting from Word, but since you now have this option on the toolbar I can’t. Actually, because of the the way I use it, it is a lot more more and strain on the carpel tunnel to have to insert it twice. For other options it may come in handy, but for this particular use I liked cutting and pasting it with text. And would like to continue to do that.
I have CSS and tried to make that work, but it does not to make these changes. I have paid the $91 for CSS, and succeeded in making some changes from the Appearance and then under the CSS category for headings, and I saw the video, but in this case those things do not work. Also, I do not know HTML. (How much do you expect from a 70 year old!) So I am amazed that I even figured out how to make the changes I did!
At any rate, both the quote marks and the horizontal line need to be darker when used from the toolbar. Also, I no longer seem to have the option of changing the color from the color button in the toolbar. That is, I am no longer able to select custom colors by color charts or typing in the color code. This also is extremely inconvenient as sometimes I like to use special colors for text that are not pre-formatted and that was extremely handy to do so.
thanks for your help! Sue Ann

Hi Sue Ann,
You can’t make the quotes black as it’s been designed into the theme that way, but you can change the color of the horizontal lines by adding this to your CSS:
div hr { background-color: black; }As for the custom colors, that has been removed with an update that recently went into place last week. You can read all about that here:

Hello,
thank you for the information. I have not tried the CSS trick yet for the line, but will.I read the info in the link about the changes to the WordPress interface. I had already discovered some of them, of course. But for some reason I missed that email, so it is good to have the explanations.
Re the color icon in the toolbar: in the explanation email you sent, when I clicked on the color change to see how it works, I noticed in the copy they had the option of More Colors is still there. However, it is not there on my toolbar icon, making it impossible to change the color of bits of text if I so wish, which I do occasionally! I wonder if this is a general error or just in my version!

Please note that has been removed. This change, along with some of the other editor changes, was part of a design and usability overhaul that was discussed at some length by WordPress core developers. However, you can still change font text colors in the Text Editor using this guide:

I changed the line, thank you.
Re colors: I never learned html. There is a level of assumption that we are all techies. Nope. Am 70 and struggle with the codes. And probably at this stage am not interested in learning html. One reason I use WordPress is so I don’t have to!
The beauty of the way the colors were set up previously was it gave us the color codes once we chose a color shading. You say to use the codes, but what if you do not know what they are?
So I am not happy with this decision by WordPress to do away with the options that were available under color codes. And not even have them available for people like me under the things I pay $100 a year for.
thank you for your help otherwise. I will keep the links on how to do things. they are helpful.
