top bar and edit button gone missing

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’ve got a small problem. Since about a week (10th of June or thereabouts) WordPress shows me my blog like I’m not a logged-in editor, even though I actually am logged in.
Meaning that (1) above my (and any other) WordPress pages I don’t get the standard black menu bar, and (2) with my own blog pages, I don’t get an “Edit” button next to the “Comment” button anymore. Even though I am logged in!
Especially (2) is very irritating because if in a published page I see some small error that should be corrected, I cannot simply click “Edit” anymore! Instead, I now have to navigate through my Dashboard and from there re-search that particular page from among all my published posts.
BTW, above my Dashboard pages the black logged-in bar will reappear. Only to disappear again when I land on any regular blog page.
So I wonder, is this an intentional design change or just a not-yet-noticed design error? If the latter, can this be corrected? Please?
    Thanks for looking into this!
    Henk

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you using IE10 on Windows 7?

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies and JavaScript enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

    http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

If it’s still happening, let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

Hi timethief, thanks for your fast reaction!
I’m using Opera 12.15, and got the same problem with all other browsers, such as IE10.
In the meantime, using my head (which I admit I should have tried before) I found out that the problem is indeed mine and not yours, and that the culprit is my Windows hosts file. Bypassing the hosts file does solve the problem.
Now my hosts file is huge (over 300,000 blocked domain names) and it’s being kept up-to-date frequently and automatically, by the Abelhadigital software HostsMan (v4.0.95) which in turn relies on data it downloads from reliable well-known sources such as hpHosts (hosts-file.net/) and the Malware Domain List (www.malwaredomainlist.com/).
Clearly, last week a specific wordpress component with a specific domain or subdomain adress must have slipped into those lists, and as a result it’s now being blocked by my hosts file.
I’ve marked this item as “resolved” right now. But obviously, I now do have a follow-up question for you…
I’d like to get a list of all the essential WordPress domain names, in order to (a) put those domains in my own HostsMan whitelist, and (b) check out with the data providers to see which one of them has wrongly added a part of WordPress to their blacklist.
Would it be possible to give a complete list here of all the WordPress-related domains (or maybe subdomains) that ought to be NOT blocked, in order to have WordPress functioning correctly?
Maybe such a not-to-block list would help some others, too…
In the meantime, sorry for stealing your time ;-) and thanks,
    Henk

    Hi Henk,
I tagged this thread for a response to your question from Staff.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks! I did a little preliminary work, by simply registering what domains were queried when opening my own WordPress blog page. Here is the result:

    0.gravatar.com
    1.gravatar.com
    2.gravatar.com
    certificates.godaddy.com
    doug1izaerwt3.cloudfront.net
    edge.quantserve.com
    fonts.googleapis.com
    i.kissmetrics.com
    ocsp.godaddy.com
    p.typekit.net
    pixel.quantserve.com
    platform.twitter.com
    r-login.wordpress.com
    s.stats.wordpress.com
    s0.wp.com
    s1.wp.com
    s2.wp.com
    stats.wordpress.com
    themes.googleusercontent.com
    trk.kissmetrics.com
    use.typekit.net
    widgets.wp.com
    wordpress.com
    http://www.google-analytics.com

Of all these, I found the following subset being blocked by my hosts file:

    doug1izaerwt3.cloudfront.net
    edge.quantserve.com
    i.kissmetrics.com
    p.typekit.net
    pixel.quantserve.com
    s.stats.wordpress.com
    stats.wordpress.com
    trk.kissmetrics.com
    http://www.google-analytics.com

So now the question is: is one of these blocked domains essential for getting WordPress to function properly?
And BTW, for self-evident reasons I really wouldn’t like to un-block snooper sites such as quantserve and kissmetrics…
Thanks again for looking into this,
    Henk

    Hi henkvansetten,

You should be whitelisting anything at *.wordpress.com or *.wp.com. We also use kissmetrics, google analytics, and quantserve for stats, and typekit for fonts. You can try to access your site without some of these connections, but you may run into trouble with some of our functionality.

  • Unknown's avatar

Of all these, I found the following subset being blocked by my hosts file:

    doug1izaerwt3.cloudfront.net
    edge.quantserve.com
    i.kissmetrics.com
    p.typekit.net
    pixel.quantserve.com
    s.stats.wordpress.com
    stats.wordpress.com
    trk.kissmetrics.com
    http://www.google-analytics.com

I don’t think you need to block p.typekit.net, that one is used for serving custom fonts.

The rest don’t look essential to the toolbar to me, and I did put in a request to see if I could find out more about this, but I think the fastest way to figure it out would actually be for you to unblock the ones in your final list and check the toolbar again. If the toolbar starts working, just add back the domains from the list one at a time until you figure out what might be causing the block. (Make sure to clear cache between checks if that’s needed.)

Just for good measure, I wanted to note that I did check http://stayontop.org/ and I can see the toolbar working, so I can verify something local like your blocked domains list a likely culprit.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for your checking and for your advice, I had in fact already thought of that and plan to systematically test the blacklisted ones tomorrow (as my local time is past 22:30 now).
If I do find out something and it may be useful for other users, I’ll post it here. And if necessary, I will also mail the blacklist people to make clear that they made an error.
    Thanks again!

Well… I guess this is “not resolved” after all. I did not manage to find a hosts file “culprit”. Maybe if there was one, it was already deleted from the hosts file.
Anyway, I now have a situation where IE10 (my fallback browser) is handling WP correctly, while Opera 12.15 x64 (my default browser) is still having the same issue (no toolbar when browsing WP sites, no Edit button with own posts).
I’ve checked and doublechecked my Opera settings to make sure that Opera itself is not blocking something, but did not to find anything that looked like a possible cause.
Maybe here is an indication that can help you to determine exactly what’s wrong here.
In Opera just like in IE, I can use Dashboard to edit a new post. But there is a weird difference.
If while editing I click Preview in IE, it will normally show me the preview of the page I’m editing. But whenever (while editing a post) I click Preview in Opera, WP comes up with a Page Not Found error!
I’d like to get WP working right in Opera again. So, would you have any idea what might be wrong here?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Update —
I just uninstalled the 64-bit version of Opera 12.15 and made a clean reinstall of the 32-bit version of Opera 12.15. Result is that WP is now working again as it should.
But this of course is no real solution… I now wonder if the problem (that appeared out of the blue last week) might have something to do with an Opera x64 compability?
Anyway, Opera will soon introduce the next version with an all-new browser engine, so maybe it’s not worth the trouble to check out this possibility now. Still, when I’ve got some more time I will reinstall Opera x64 alongside the x86 so I can compare the two. If this is indeed a browser issue I will post it here.

I tested Opera after downloading the latest version (12.15) to my Mac OS X 10.8.3 using the download link on this page http://www.opera.com/

In my tests, the toolbar worked normally while I was logged in to WordPress.com.

I think the issue still may have something to do with your local settings, but definitely try updating your browser to try it again to see if that helps.

    yep I get the same
    also problems with r-login
also problems with the posts page search box disappearing (actually it moves to the bottom of the page) IE10 win7

  • Unknown's avatar

@kothea, I checked http://stayontop.org/ and I can see the dark gray top toolbar working on the home page. Is it gone for you every time you load the page or just sometimes?

    also problems with r-login

Please make sure you have third party cookies enabled in your browser settings and also try clearing your browser cache and try logging in again.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies

also problems with the posts page search box disappearing

I tested http://stayontop.org/ using IE10 in Windows 7 and I could see the toolbar and search widget at the top of the sidebar on the home page without any problems. Can you confirm that the search box at the top of the sidebar at http://stayontop.org/ the one you are referring to?
