top menu bar sometimes jumps up when i scroll but sometimes rides down the page.

the top horizontal navigation bar is below the header. Is this correct?
Also, I notice that the side menu bar is not adjacent to the header but the header spans the entire top of the page. I substituted a header that is 1260×240 (suggested size for 20-14) but it left space on the right side.
I’d like to know if the front page looks like it should in the twenty fourteen theme.
The twenty fourteen theme demo shows a side menu that goes to the top of the page and the header does not have a moving bar beneath it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I want to assure you that the Twenty Fourteen theme is working as it should on your site.

the top horizontal navigation bar is below the header. Is this correct?

Yep, that’s right! If you look at the Twenty Fourteen demo site, you’ll see the navigation bar at the top of the page. That’s because the demo site isn’t using a custom header image. Since you have a header image, that will appear above the navigation bar.

Also, I notice that the side menu bar is not adjacent to the header but the header spans the entire top of the page.

That’s the way the theme is designed. The side menu bar will appear to the side of the content, but below your custom header image and the top navigation bar.

I substituted a header that is 1260×240 (suggested size for 20-14) but it left space on the right side.

The Twenty Fourteen theme is designed to be a maximum of 1260 pixels wide. If your browser is wider than that, you’ll see blank space to the right of the theme in your browser.

You can also read more about the theme’s features here: https://wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/

Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)

    one more thing, rachelmor,
The navigation bar , as I’m scrolling down the page, usually stays in its place.

Occasionally, though, as I scroll down the page and reach the point just past the header, (so that I can no longer see the header) the navigation bar jumps down the page (it jumps a space approximately equal to the height of the header) and continues to ride down the page with the scrolling, covering over the words as it goes.

It only happens occasionally so i don’t want to change anything if the cure affects the way the header is showing. But I’m wondering if I’ve done something incorrectly to cause this.

    thanks,
    evelyn

    Hi Evelyn,

That does sound strange — is that only happening to you on certain pages on your site, or can it sometimes happen no matter what page you’re on?

Also, when it happens, can you make a screenshot of what you see on your screen? You can upload screenshots to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy.

I haven’t been able to recreate that problem on my end, so a little more information might help me narrow down why it’s happening to you so we can investigate it further. :)

As far as I remember I have only seen it on the front page – the static home page – and it only happens once in a while.

Great idea to take a screen shot.

The next time it happens I will do that and add it to media.

I tried to recreate the problem by going to the site repeatedly but it did not occur.

One of the other two editors had it happen to her but that was shortly after we switched from twenty twelve to twenty fourteen – a couple of months back.

I’ll leave this query “open” and when I see this happen I’ll take the screen shot and try to respond to you here.

    Thanks so much.

Sounds great! Do let me know if you can catch the issue in action — that should give me more information to investigate it for you. :)

    Hi rachelmor,

I was able to make the navigation bar aberration occur.
So, therefore, I think it is an operator error with me being the operator.
And I suspect that therefore it is not something that needs to be fixed by wordpress.

    Here’s how i did it.
When the web site was loading but before it could finish loading I started scrolling. And the event occurred. The navigation bar moved down the page as I scrolled.

(btw I use Safari on a MacBook Pro for my browser)

I did take 3 screen shots which are in the library titled navigation bar 1,2 and 3 at the top left of the library for you to see.

If you wish to take this further you are welcome to but since I was able to make it happen and it usually does not happen, I feel that it’s unnecessary for you to bother with except perhaps to make a note on this account, if possible, so that if it ever starts to happen more frequently we can deal with it then….
We have worked very hard on our web site and i don’t want to take the chance of changing anything – the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!” sentiment.

Thanks very much for your excellent help. I’m satisfied with all that you explained to me and as far as I’m concerned we can mark this issue “resolved” unless you wish to comment further on the navigation bar topic.

    Hi Evelyn,

Thanks for letting me know! I’ll pass along the details and screenshots to our team, so they have the details of the issue you’re seeing. But from what you described, I think it’s just a little browser glitch that can happen if you start scrolling before the page finishes loading.

If it does become a bigger issue for you, please let us know so we can do more investigating. But for now I’ll mark this as resolved. :)

    Hi Happiness Engineer!

Thanks for your kind response. I am very glad that you think that perhaps it is indeed a browser glitch. Gives me just a smidgeon of comfort with the “internets” and a sense of familiarity with it all, trying to keep up with my grandchildren to whom this is somehow second nature.

Thanks for marking this resolved and for being so much help on wordpress.

    You do WordPress Proud!!!!!

    Good bye for now :)
    Evelyn
