Top Posts & Pages widget not displaying correct number of posts/pages
-
The Top Posts & Pages widget is not displaying number of posts and pages it is set to display. I have it set to display the maximum of 10. Late last night it began displaying only three, and a little while latter it was showing four, though I hadn’t changed the maximum. Today it has been displaying eight.

The number of “Top Posts and Pages” has been stuck on 5 for the past 15-20 hours. It’s still set to display 10.
-
-
It’s been on 10 for years, without any noticed variation. Since I have the widget at the top of the sidebar and I visit the site frequently, I would notice any change. My volume went up dramatically a few days ago. Would this cause the number of top posts and pages displayed? And if so, why? That would suggest that there is a maximum number of views allowed per some increment of time.
-
I meant to say, “Would this cause a reduction in the number of top posts and pages displayed?”
-
Please note that only unique posts within 2 days will be shown. A post is removed when there is overlap between two top posts from the last two days, which can result in fewer than 10 unique posts. This is why up to 10 will show, but not necessarily 10 every time.

“A post is removed when there is overlap between two top posts from the last two days…”
What does that mean. The number of top posts displayed was steadily 10, or whatever maximum I set, for years. I used to often set it at 12 before they reduced the maximum. Displaying fewer than the set number, even half or fewer of the set number, has never occurred before, or it has happened so infrequently and for such a brief time that I’ve never noticed it. I typically spend hours a day on the site. Even it is displayed 9 instead of 10 occasionally I’d notice it.
-
It means that if the post is a top post for two days in a row it will be removed. It will refresh after that.
-
That didn’t happen. I had the same top post throughout the period during which the fluctuation in the number “top posts” occurred.

I see! The next time there is less than 10 can you let me know right away and I can take a look? Since the query gets the top ten posts for two days, if in the two days there are the same posts, it will remove them to keep unique posts. Nevertheless when it happens I can take a further look. Currently I am seeing 10.
Also, I just saw that a couple of your posts have more than 15 tags. If there are more than 15 that post will automatically be removed from the Reader and it won’t be searchable. So, if you want those posts to be searchable in the Reader, please limit the number of tags to 15. You can read more about this here:

Wasn’t aware of this. But, as I said, this hasn’t happened before and it’s unlike that I would have had 6 top 10 posts (only 4 were showing one day) a. with more than 15 tags, b. that hadn’t appeared in the top 10 before. Very low probability.
Thanks for your assistance and the link.

Actually, being banned from the tag pages has all kinds of unintended consequences and this is entirely probable. It takes some time to get flagged as a tag spammer; before this, everything works normally. After it, things don’t.

Raincoaster,
Very well. But it went back to normal on the third day, November 7th. The period during which fewer than the maximum posts were displayed in the widget coincided with a sharp spike in traffic volume, > 3.5 times October average for two days.

I don’t have any post and it’s very embarrassing that it says, There are no posts to display. Want more traffic? –right on my HP.
-
Actually, that didn’t make any sense. I do have posts but it stopped showing them in the Top Posts area.
