top posts show activity not listed in stats

  Can the stat counter be missing something “top posts” picks up? I have noticed this strange new thing three times in the last week: the “top posts” list has several items listed that are not in the stats– nor in the spam (thought that might be, but I noticed that pages that have spammed comments do not appear in stats or top posts.)
  Could people be visiting without setting a cookie counter (is that necessary to visit)? Is that a way to miss stats for visitors?
