Top Posts widget acting odd
-
I use the Top Posts widget in my sidebar. I label it “Most Read.” In it, I always have the five (5) most read on there. Tonight – and this is really odd – numbers 1, 2 and 4 are showing up. But in the spaces where #3 and #5, for most read posts, should be…………nothing. It’s blank.
That’s one I’ve never encountered. Anyone have any thoughts? I’ve taken the widget off and placed it back on…didn’t change anything. My wife’s blog – I had her put the Top Posts widget on her blog to see if it did the same thing…nope. It worked just fine.
At worst, I’ll just take it off. But obviously, something is amiss.
Thanks to anyone who has a thought!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sidebars are cached, it may be a server caching issue. Give it a couple hours and see if it doesn’t right itself.

That IS odd; have you edited the titles of those blog posts, or set them to Private or something?
This is the code I see in the widget:
<ul><li><a href="http://blogharbor.wordpress.com/2008/02/24/women-the-power-that-transforms/">Women: The Power that Transforms</a></li><li><a href="http://blogharbor.wordpress.com/2008/06/08/where-have-you-gone-boston-garden/">Where Have You Gone, Boston Garden</a></li><li><a href="http://blogharbor.wordpress.com/2008/03/07/hillary-clinton-todays-richard-iii/attachment/135/"></a></li><li><a href="http://blogharbor.wordpress.com/2009/02/06/low-pressure-front-no-its-a-colonoscopy/">Low Pressure Front? No, It's a Colonoscopy</a></li><li><a href="http://blogharbor.wordpress.com/2008/02/24/women-the-power-that-transforms/attachment/127/"></a></li></ul> </li>And those ones that end with /attachment/# are obviously malformatted. This, for instance:

Is just a JPG. I can’t imagine how it got into your top posts, UNLESS someone is hotlinking it. That might be what’s happening. -
If someone is hotlinking, there’s a simple solution. Take the picture down, delete it entirely from your Media Gallery, not just that one post. Then change the file name and re-upload it and put it in the post. That’ll screw up all the hotlinkers and still give you your picture.

Hi Raincoaster…
Well, for starters I’ve never changed the title of a post since day one of being with WordPress. Nor is any post private.
As for the rest, I’m confused on the malformatted. I’ve always inserted pictures the exact same way – and have never once had a problem. So, it begs the question of what, exactly, did I do wrong…though I’ve always done things the same way….does that make sense? :-)
As for the whole hotlinking issue…well, I know how to write and I know how to be a talk show host. I do not understand hotlinking, hotlinkers, hotlinking tendencies or hotlinks on the grill.
Any explanation would be hotlinking helpful.

I don’t think you did anything wrong. I think people are using your pictures on their site without proper downloading and uploading to their site. It won’t cost you anything, but it’s bad form on their part. And it does mess up your Top Posts thingy.
What it means is, that pic of Oprah is getting as many hits as any actual post on your site.

Ok, I think I’ve got it. I’ve read and digested your comment…I think. So, for the Top Posts thing to now work – after it’s worked forever before – I need to take down every picture that happens to be in a post with “attachment?” Is that right…ballpark right? Hell, I’m getting confused! :-0
-
No.
Just take down the ones showing up in the code above. The Oprah one and the other, http://blogharbor.wordpress.com/2008/03/07/hillary-clinton-todays-richard-iii/attachment/135/ and then you can re-upload them. Do one first and see what happens to your Top Posts widget.

Well, I tried removing the Oprah image, which worked. But now, for some reason it won’t re-load. Honestly, this is becoming The Nightmare of Blog Harbor. Still efforting over here…

Ok, nothing has changed with the Top Posts widget so I’m just taking it out. I’ve never had a problem with it until tonight…what you’re saying makes sense but no matter what I do, it’s giving me three out of five. I hate removing the thing because it’s a nice feature for new readers. But this nightmare just isn’t worth it.

Raincoaster – just a postscript for you: I tried, just for the heck of it, to see how the Top Posts widget was looking on my blog right now. You’ll recall from my last update, I had taken it off. I put it back on with the post count set for 5………..ONE showed up. 1. Not even little black dots with empty space next to it………..just one post.
I’m wondering if something more than just hot-linking is going on with this thing on my site.
Anyway, thanks for trying to help!

Yes, I think you’ll have to call in staff on this one. Contact them via the Contact Support button. They’ll be able to see things you and I can’t. Sorry I couldn’t help.
