This is the thread. I don’t know who closed it, or if it’s an automatic thing, but my question would have followed on to the last poster who said “this is flash and is not allowed for security reasons”. So we have established the following:
There is only one countdown widget that works for the wordpress.com blogs. The overly twee TickerFactory which is html based.
Flash widgets are not allowed “for security reasons”.
So there I’m still left hanging without any real answers except those intended to brush me aside and ‘stop bothering us with this nonsense’. But it would have been nice with some real answers:
What are the ‘security reasons’ that only allow flash countdown widgets for the .org (paid for) blogs and not the free .com?
Why is there not a single genius out there who is able to produce a less twee countdown widget in html for the .com users? (What EXACTLY is the problem? The money? Ah. The money. Why didn’t I think of that before.)
Will you ever eve consider making one (‘fraid this lies without my area of competence), or is it really the money question that gets in the way and WordPress is too uptight to say it straight?
Am I annoyed? You BET I am.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Flash, javascript and iframes are some of the most often used doorways hackers and spammers use to get into and break sites, or spread malware, spam, hate and discontent. A surprising amount of flash and javascript floating around out there has security holes you can pass a planet through. In fact you now even have to be careful about wordpress themes for self-hosted blogs since they are being modified or written and distributed by hackers to include nasty things that wreak havoc.
Services that allow javascript and flash are constantly having to deal with the results of bad script installed by users – knowingly or not – and it has brought down more than a few of them.
WordPress.COM is a multi-user platform which means we all share the same underlying theme and wordpress files and any bad code, or security issue introduced by a user could bring down a bunch of blogs.

If you want the flash and javascript, why not self-host a blog? The combined average monthly cost will typically run you between $10 and $25 per month depending on how much bandwidth and storage space you need.

I should address this also. If you have a self-hosted blog, it is just that, SELF-hosted. That means that from the moment you download it, you are entirely responsible for everything you do with it. If you get hacked because you put in some bad code, or the bad code you insert breaks your blog, then it is all on YOU. WordPress.ORG makes the software, and once you download it, then what you do with it from that point forward is entirely your business.
WordPress.COM is an entirely different thing, and they have to look out for everyone that blogs here.

Wow. Ok. Now I know a lot more and it makes more sense. But — why can’t we get an html countdown widget…?
Anyway, thank you for your lengthy and clarifying replies. Even if you sounded a little annoyed… I’m an innocent and still believe in roses and pink clouds and find it hard to believe that there are EVIL HACKERS that would want to ruin my blog, but that is of course naive. :-)
