I believe you’re referring to a star like the one shown in this screenshot:
If so, that’s an indicator that someone has “Liked” on of your posts. Beneath each of your posts, you’ll see a WordPress.com “Like” button like this:
When someone clicks that button, you’ll get a notification.
However, it shouldn’t spin when clicked; it should display a drop-down of your recent notifications with the most recent “Like” at the top. Here’s an example:
Can you try clicking this icon in another browser (looks like you’re using Firefox now so perhaps Chrome)? Let me know if you experience the same thing!

hi timethief: thank you for your prompt answer! unfortunately, i am not as tech-savvy to understand 80% of what you’ve written (sorry). but you get an “A” for the effort in reply; even tho i’m not tek-savvy i know you’ve given a comprehensive thorough answer. but i think your suggestion #5 solved the problem. thank you!

hi jeremeylduvall, you got it. i clicked on “star” via chrome and it worked just fine. why, what happened? why does it not work via firefox? just curious… (thankyoumuch!)

It should work in Firefox as well. It looks like you’re using Firefox 38.0, which is working correctly on my side. Can you try resetting Firefox as described here?
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings
This will reset Firefox back to its basic settings just in case you’ve made some adjustments that are causing this error. It will remove the following:
Extensions and themes, website permissions, modified preferences, added search engines, download history, DOM storage, security settings, download actions, plugin settings, toolbar customizations, user styles and social features will be removed.
