Total Newb, lots of basic questions…

I see a lot of references to ‘custom templates’ and such but I don’t see a place to upload/download – is this only if you install word press on your own server? So say I wanted a template that was basically layed out as the calendar of the month and you clicked a link that would open up the details (think calendar on your iPhone/iPod), am I just out of luck if I want to be able to do that if I just choose the upgraded services route of wordpress.com?

I have no plans on install on own server. I’m just researching for organizational use and are plan would be just to buy the upgrades through wordpress.com. Just need to simply put basic static pages up for the public to see (I’m good on the domain name registration part). How do you make a static page your ‘home’ page instead of this default blog stuff which we really have no use for and would assume to just get rid of?

Are there more than just these 60 or 70 themes? I’d like to be able to go out and just purchase one from somewhere, upload it and use it. Nothing in this list of themes meets all my needs but I don’t see a place to upload a theme or purchase a theme. Updating the CSS alone wouldn’t be enough. For instance I don’t want to show who created the theme on public face information web site – that’s just unprofessional and makes the web site look cheap. I also don’t want to show ‘last edited’. It seems one theme may hide one, but not the other.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

And to continue…how do you edit what you posted as in the case here…this forum posts like a blog instead of a forum?

How do you you make ‘Blog Roll’ say ‘Links’ instead…I want a list links, not blogs.

There are no custom templates that can be used on WordPress.COM blogs; they are for independently hosted blogs. There are no calendar themes at WordPress.Com. If you know CSS well and can edit your own changes to themes, you can use Sandbox, purchase the paid CSS upgrade, and write your own changes.

You can’t edit the posts you make in this forum.

You can’t rename the Links widget, but you can put any links you want in it. Or you can just use a text widget and add the links manually via HTML.

    • Please paste the exact URL of your blog when asking questions here, or link your nickname to your blog (as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know Before Posting). Helps us help you.

    • In a wp.COM blog you are limited to the (currently 77) themes available under Appearance>Themes. With the paid CSS upgrade you can modify their appearance (including hiding elements).

    • For a static front see here:
    http://support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
(If you want no posts at all, you can set the static page as your front and skip the Posts part.)

    • Dashboard sidebar > Links: when you assign your links to one or more link categories you specify (“Links” or whatever), that’s what you’ll get in the sidebar instead of “Blogroll”.
