Total newbie — need help with SELA

  • Unknown's avatar

I am brand new to all of this, having left the corporate world for freelancing. I know nothing about coding.

I am trying desperately to at least get the SELA theme with the front page template up and going so it looks like it does on the theme display page, with the picture and the overlay.

I can’t even make a dent even with the theme guide. If there is anyone out there who might be able to help. I am getting stuck on the very first step of this as I go to create a page, but I want this to be my home page.

If you’d like to use the Front Page Template instead, follow these steps:

Create or edit a page, and assign it the Front Page Template from the Page Attributes box.
Go to Settings → Reading and set “Front page displays” to “A static page.”
Select the page created in Step One as “Front page,” and choose another page as “Posts page” to display your blog posts.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Create or edit a page, and assign it the Front Page Template from the Page Attributes box.

See the Page Attributes support page. Every page editor has a page attributes module. Some themes, including Sela, have optional page templates to choose from in a menu in the page attributes module. Select the Front Page Template from the menu.

Go to Settings → Reading and set “Front page displays” to “A static page.” Select the page created in Step One as “Front page,” and choose another page as “Posts page” to display your blog posts.

After you’ve created a page, assigned it to the Front Page Template, and added a featured image (this can be done later), then you’ll need to assign the page as your front page at Reading > Settings. See the Front Page support page on how to set up a static front page.

…and choose another page as “Posts page” to display your blog posts.

This is an important step that is sometimes missed. In order to create a static front page, you have to assign the posts stream to another page. Create a page (which will not be seen and therefore needs no content). Title it “posts,” “blog,” or whatever you wish. Assign this as your posts page at Reading > Settings.

  • Looks like you’ve set up your static homepage and assigned the Front Page template to it. Next, as musicdoc1 suggested, try adding a featured image and some text so it starts to look more like the demo.

Just let us know where you’re getting stuck so we can help further!

Thank you guys. I am getting stuck pretty much everywhere. And getting very frustrated. I basically need someone to walk me through this step by step — I have always had an IT department and my strengths are content not web design.

Kathryn and musicdoc1 thanks for link to Featured images. Did that.

I am trying to get my page to look like the demo with the text overlay on the featured image, the menu bar that links to individual pages and then the widgets underneath. My two main goals right now are:

1.) figuring out how to do the text overlay over the featured images and
2.) getting those individual pages going in the menu bar (Experience, services, etc.)

I have figured out how to edit pages but I can’t for the life of my figure out how to link those pages to the menu items.

Thank you, thank you again. I am 1,300 miles away from home and trying to find someone locally to help, but right now the online community is my best option! Appreciate it.

Okay I just figured out how to link the pages to the menu. I was doing it backwards (creating the menu items before the pages.)

One other question — how do you add links to content with in the widgets? So sorry for all the questions — I keep searching for support pages on word press and am finding good broad information but not so much on the detailed things.

1.) figuring out how to do the text overlay over the featured images…

The content of the overlay on a page assigned to the Front Page Template (and only on such a page) is as follows:
    1. The page title, centered and in caps
    2. The page content, including any text, images, videos*, etc.
    3. Likes and Shares buttons, if enabled
    4. An “edit” link, visible to Adminstrators, Editors, and (only if the page is their own, I think) Authors

    * With little difficulty I was able to put four playable YouTube videos in the overlay on a test website, two rows of two videos.

One other question — how do you add links to content with in the widgets?

Very easily. See the Text Widget Links support page.
