Track backs and contacts

    Hiya

    I have noticed I am getting a lot of Track backs….I was getting them mixed up with links, as I thought thats what they were, but on further investigation, I have found, they are not actually links, but some sort of …well keeping an eye on your site?

    I have looked in the support section at trackbacks, but what does it actually mean, and whats the difference between links and trackback, as like I said, I thought they were the same thing, maybe just with a different name or maybe a slang name.

    Also, when you look on someone’s site, how can you contact them please….?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Most of these are spam links. I would just delete.

    I was rather impressed with them to be honest, so have approved a couple of them. How do I get to contact some people on their sites though….

    If someone is legitimately linking your blog, than those trackbacks are genuine. But my experience is that most of the trackbacks are spams. I also sense that the more popular the topic of the content is, the more spam trackbacks you’d get.

    You should be able to contact the blog owners who are legitimately linking from you.

    Ok…it was in the spam folder, but it seemed a genine posting to me.

    Ok, that sounds logical too!

    Linking by links you mean?? Can you find them through trackbacks also????

    @Sharon
    No every trackback and pingback received that is spam is detected by Akismet. It’s up to us blogger to moderate all comments, check out the sites pingbacks and trackbacks are coming from, learn how to spot spam when we see it, and learn how to spot a splog (spam blog).

    I see that many new bloggers are so desirous of getting comments that they are approving spam. http://www.blogherald.com/2010/04/23/human-spam-and-dumb-bloggers-killing-comments-and-trackbacks/

    Thanks TT – as always ;) – I understand what you are saying completely…..well the one I got did seem genuine and nice so I accepted it….but I do understand what you are saying.

    Thanks for the links….I shall look at them.

    So as arifsali says ‘You should be able to contact the blog owners who are legitimately linking from you.’ I find when I go to someone’s blog, I cant always find a contact link to get a message to them :(…

    Just leave them a comment.

    Hello Raincoaster! Ah and let them know that way what I want to tell them?? Also that Akismet has already caught so many spams….how I do I find out what they have stopped though….?

    If people don’t have contact forms or post their email, that’s a clue that if you want to get a hold of them, they want you to leave a comment to that effect. That’s what I do on my main blog, because I don’t want a hundred emails from people who won’t say in public what they have to say in private.

    To see the spam in Akismet, go to your Comments page, then click on Spam towards the top of the page, where it says:
    Comments

    * All | * Pending | * Approved | * Spam | * Trash

    Hiya Raincoaster :D

    Thankyou so much for that help :D….ok that makes sense…..so how do I, myself personally do that, have somewhere where people can leave me private messages incse they dont want to leave a public comment – thats not the same as the following what I have put in my side panel is it? :

    Email Subscription
    You are subscribed to this blog (manage).

    I would like a box or something that would invite people to personally email me….like for it to say

    To contact me:
    (Then click something that will tell them what to do??

    RE spam a min, I think thats where I do pick it up from, what I actually meant was I get a message where all the comments approved etc are saying at the bottom :

    Akismet has protected your site from 65 spam comments already, and there’s 1 comment in your spam queue right now.

    So where do I find all these 65 comments that they have stopped??

    have somewhere where people can leave me private messages incse they dont want to leave a public comment

    You create a static page and title it Contact or Contact me. You switch to the HTML editor and type in [contact-form] exactly the way I have typed it. Copying and pasting will not work. Then you publish the Page.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

    Placing the Pages widget in the sidebar will provide access to that Contact Page. Note that in order to see what the contact form looks like to your readers you MUST sign out of wordpress.com. Then you will see it asks for their name and email address. When you are signed in your will not see those fields. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/pages-widget/
