Trackbacks… I still don’t know how!
-
I’ve read the FAQ, I know in theory how to do trackbacks… but in practice I just can’t do it! For instance, the FAQ fays I need to find the “trackback URI” of the blog in question. Well, most blogs I’ve read, there are the links for people who want to “leave a comment” or “a trackback from their own site”. I click on this “trackback” link… and it’ll bring me round in a circle to the place where you leave regular comments! The FAQ says look for something like “Trackback URI” – but I’ve never seen such a link!
Please please… in regular, “layman’s” language, can someone explain how to do a trackback? I’ve been doing basic blogging for a short while now, but I’m certainly not an expert or anything, so I definitely need an explanation that isn’t in jargon. Please can anyone help out?

An example of a post where you’re trying to send a trackback to would be helpful so we can see what you’re looking at.
It’s pretty much just make a link to the post though. Most blogging software will pick up the link automatically now a days.

Okay, drmike… and anyone else who’d like to help out… this is the link to a blog entry that I wanted to do a trackback to:
http://gigaom.com/2007/09/05/how-to-get-200-back-if-you-just-got-an-iphone/
So, if someone could explain how I do it, that’d be cool :)

You simply put that link in a post on your blog. That’s all there is to it (as long as the post in the other blog allows trackbacks).

On the write post page look down under the editor box. Now look below the upload box. You will see “Optional Excerpt” and below it VOILA! you will see “Trackbacks +” . Click the plus + sign and the trackback box will open:
Send trackbacks to: ________________ (Separate multiple URLs with spaces)
Enter the url http://gigaom.com/2007/09/05/how-to-get-200-back-if-you-just-got-an-iphone/
into the box where indicated and then publish the post.

Trackbacks are tricky if you aren’t going from a WordPress blog to a WordPress blog.
For example, my TypePad test blog accepts and sends Trackback pings.
If I want to Trackback to a WordPress blog from TypePad, I have to add “/trackback” to the end of my WordPress URL and actually put it in the TypePad Trackback box for the post entry to get the Trackback to work. Just linking something in the post itself — even with the full Trackback URL — will not get the Trackback to fire.
Now, if I want to Trackback to my TypePad blog from my WordPress blog, the process is a little different. For example, my “Work For Hire” article on TypePad has this URL:
http://www.wordpunk.com/2007/09/work-for-hire.html
However, if I want to actually get a Trackback to appear, I have to use this special Trackback code found at the end of my post:
http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/2579130/21417857
If I do not use that silly, ugly, TypePad Trackback URL then I will not get the Trackback pinned to my article. Crazy, eh? If you actually click on that ugly URL it takes you nowhere as an invalid URL — yet in the proper place — it will connect a Trackback.
Oh, and those Trackbacks to TypePad MUST be placed in the “Trackbacks” window in the WordPress write interface. You cannot use that ugly URL in your article proper — linked or not — because it will not be recognized by the TypePad system as a valid ping for tracking.
Finally…. Blogger… doesn’t support Trackbacks:

Huh??? Sorry I dont get it. THis wordpress stuff is so confusing. I tried to copy the url and enter it in the trackback box like said above but where am I suppossed to see it? On my page or the original blog? Here is the blog i’m trying to trackback to http://celebratelove.wordpress.com/2007/09/14/looking-out-for-1/
Thanks!!

it will go to the original blog, but the theme may not show trackbacks/pingbacks. If you want to make sure you’re giving credit where it’s due, put the link in the body of the post, too.
