Trackbacks – What are they & how are they used?
-
I am trying to understand what are the purpose of trackbacks. When I click on Trackback, nothing happens so my trial and error exploration of these is confusing. Can someone please explain the purpose behind these??? and, how you should best utilize them?? Also, what are the pros and cons of using them???

Trackbacks are a way of commenting on an article on your own Web site while still having your message posted under the original post. Basically, instead of filling out the blog’s local comment form, you write a post out.
Enabling them on your site allows people to do the same for your blog. -
Trackbacks in blogging a very much like the footnoted citation references used in writing.
TrackBack is a type of peer-to-peer communication system that was designed to send notification of updates between two Web sites via an electronic notification Trackback Ping.
Ping in reference to TrackBack refers to a small message sent from one Web server to another. TrackBacks are useful for informing a Web site that you have referenced its Web site within your own Web site, and is popular with bloggers.

Thanks this helps a bunch. As with the original poster, my hunt and peck initiation yielded dismal return.

alright, i must humbly admit that i indeed still do not understand how to use trackbacks.
to utilize should i:
copy the trackback URL into the comment box on the person’s blog?
copy the trackback URL into some random comment box on my page?
drag the trackback button somewhere special so it can do it’s thing?
just hit the trackback button on someone’s page and begin tithing?
i am new to this type of blog hosting and really would like to be able to utilize the vast wealth of resources available.
thanks in advance =]

Mark has provided illustrated instructions here http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/11/how-do-i-send-a-trackback/

This is something that i have been a little foggy on, too. So, are pingbacks and trackbacks essentially the same thing?
From the FAQ and the codex glossary, it seems that the only difference is that pingbacks are automatic assuming the referenced blog is pingback-enabled (a link within the post is sufficient to trigger a pingback), while trackbacks have to be specifically entered in the trackback field of a post.
Do i have this right?

I may need to read again, and try a few to get it solid in my head. I just read Mark’s trackback and pingback page….but so far what I worked out is:
Trackbacks allow a small section of the blog shown in the comments box, allowing the person to see at a glance if the think they may want to click on it, pingbacks dont do this. Pingbacks are automatically verified, trackbacks are not.
It’s two different types of technologies at work with their own limitations. I’m also guessing that some blogs and blogging software may only allow one or the other, which is why people list both if they can.

The Trackbacks line only allows for the insertion of the url and the line above it allows for an “Optional Excerpt” … I’m really over my head here … I can’t say I “comprehend” this subject at all. I’m a monkey clicking buttons. All I know is how to effect the end I want.
