Traffic
-
I have seen an increase in the number of posts where someone will say something like “If you want to know more, read about it on my blog”.
Sometimes this is genuinely useful information.
Sometimes it seems to be a way to get traffic.But if someone sees that they can get the chance of more traffic by posting here that could be a good thing – we get more resources. But it’s worse because we end up with scattered resources, people who will then gather those and pimp their blog with them, people posting on anything just to get traffic. If we had a “Get your traffic here” forum this would be fine – but this forum is aimed at support.
And the other problem is that links here become dead if a blog moves. If we are expecting people to search and they start finding dead links it’s not so great.
And if it’s genuine information that will help, why not provide it for the FAQ ? A credit from there will probably get you more traffic from grateful people too – the FAQ gets thousands of hits a day.

@podz
People do use the post I made on wordpress widgets and do find it helpful so if you want to edit it and put it in the FAQs that would be cool.
The reason I made it in the first place is because I got tired of typing the whole thing over and over again when answering forum questions. Also about traffic you will note that this post is not on my primary blog, it’s on a blog I don’t even have a sitemeter on. http://bloggersblurt.wordpress.com/2006/09/17/widget-wizardry/ -
podz,
I have another post I send people on the forum to rather than typing the same reply again and again. It contains a link to the FAQ’s but it has more explanation in it than the FAQs entry provides http://bloggersblurt.wordpress.com/2006/10/08/why-javascript-gets-stripped/
I also used to send people to a post I had that was a simple walk through for putting an image into a text widget and displaying it in a sidebar. However, you now have that covered in the FAQs blog.
I could care less about either the traffic or the credit. I sure as hell am not blogging for either fame or fortune and I’ve made that abundantly clear. Blogging’s my passion and I pay my dues for the free ride by voluntarily helping on the forum nearly every day. My motivation for creating such posts was to save myself the time and effort involved in typing them over and over again when answering forum questions. Also I’ve been considering simply shutting down the blog in question and concentrating on my others. So if you want to use what’s in them go for it. If not then I’ll go back to cutting and pasting the contents into my forum answers each time like I did before. -
I think the issue may be that a lot of the time, when a link is provided, the page that one is linking to does not answer the question posed. In the last few hours, I’ve seen that about a dozen times.
I know I usually delete those posts so not to confuse anyone.

I have recorded the corrections you made in the last 2 hours to the answers I gave drmike because I like to learn from my mistakes (frontpage; public posting; how is wordpress configured). You can email me the titles/links of the others if you choose. Thanks for being such a patient and long suffering teacher. But next week I have decided to only occupy my time with making an income.

The key word in the post I made above sulz is *only*. I have devoted a lot of time to making an income while simultaneously keeping a tab open on the forum and helping whenever I could. I now intend to shut off my computer tab to the forum during working hours and *only* paint. Not to worry. There are many other geeky types with all kinds of technical expertise who will be glad to step in.
