Tranfering my domain name . . . help!

I was going to open a wordpress.com blog, but it won’t let me because the domain name is used. I own the domain name at wordpress.org and it will be cancelled soon. I want to transfer my .org blog to a .com blog. That’s where the domain name comes in. I can only set up a URL address that looks like this:
domainname.wordpress.com.
when I want one that looks like this:
domainname.com.
If I set up a blog with the URL domainname.wordpress.com, can I upgrade it to the URL domainname.com after my old site is cancelled? Will any of my information be lost?

I know the blog I specified is not hosted at WordPress.com, I do understand the difference between WordPress.com and .org, and the above automated message has nothing to do with what I asked. Can somebody help me, please?
