Transfer

I already purchased the domain name with another provider. If I want to use this domain with a WordPress.com site (instead of Squarespace), can I transfer the domain and manage both my site and domain registration within my WordPress.com account? If so, I am confused about what I would be purchasing on WordPress. Please advise.

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there,

can I transfer the domain and manage both my site and domain registration within my WordPress.com account?

If your domain has been registered for at least 60 days, you can indeed transfer it over to WordPress.com by following these steps:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

However, due to the 60-day transfer lock ICANN policy, you will not be able to transfer the domain if it has been registered for under 60 days:

    https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/

Thankfully, you can still use it with your site hosted on WordPress.com. You will just need to update the nameservers of the domain at Squarespace and point them to WordPress.com.

To do this, you’ll need to change the domain nameservers at your domain host and point them over to WordPress.com. Our nameservers are:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Then, you’ll need to purchase the connection subscription upgrade as a part of a paid plan so that you can connect your domain to your WordPress.com site.

For instructions on both processes, please visit our support page:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/connect-existing-domain/

Of course, once the 60 days have passed, you can always follow the transfer instructions to move the domain over to WordPress.com

If so, I am confused about what I would be purchasing on WordPress.

You will want to purchase one of our paid plans to host both your site and domain with us here at WordPress.com. Our plans will provide you a free domain credit to use your domain with your site for the first year, additional media library space, no ads, and more (depending on your chosen plan).

I would like to recommend a plan for you, so may I ask about your goals for your site? In general, the Personal Plan will work for many users, as it is a base plan that provides all the things you need to get your site up and running once moved over:

Hope this helps. If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’d be more than happy to assist.
