Transfer a Blog without Transfering a Blog

    It will make sense

A friend wants me to help set up a blog / site for them – but they are web challenged –

I would just set up a blog then transfer it to them, but I want their user name and blog name to match – (personal OCD thing) –

So I should be able to log out then open up an account and blog for them using a spare email, then when the site is finished, just change the email for the account / blog to their email and give them the password and the blog is now theirs and not mine

Am I missing anything? And my spare email goes back to being “spare” and goes away from the WordPress.COM system (other than a note hidden in the records somewhere that it was used to start a blog and account but is not part of that account anymore)

    thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I did something like that for a sister-in-law.

I’m trying to remember how it actually worked: she gave me her email and password so I signed up as her. Then using that, I invited myself as an admin. Then forgot the password for her email addy (not hard to forget at my age!) so she owned the site but I was an admin.

I think your method would work, though. Let someone else chime in…

Thanks Tess – I can’t see an issue with this method either – but then the forum is full of “I did not know this would really happen, or did not see (fill in the blank) – so thought I would ask

My friend has some sort of block on moving their site and making it look like anything more than a place holder – so I thought I would do a demo site for them and see if that helps

A demo site? You mean a test blog?
That sil wanted her name to match the blog and that seemed the most direct way. Of course that meant she trusted me with her password, but family is family…
I’d make sure your friend at least signed up with an account with the user name first. Otherwise it might have to be a variation or a domain mapping upgrade.
Idunno. The other sil just let me sign up for a bunch of test sites because she wanted the domain mapping to start with.

Oh, and sil 2 also wanted to see how different themes looked so…

They have a domain already, and they are thinking (have for a year now) about moving it – it is now a one page dark gray html place holder that should say “No Coherent Construction Zone”

yes a Test site – but thought I would set it up with the correct names from the start -before I moved to WordPress.COM I set up a test site to make the move with – under an existing account and missed the part that account names can become blog names but blog names seem not to be able to be turned into user names – a name that I use from time to time when posting comment –

The consultant they used for the place holder site now has their home page with WordPress.ORG – just trying to save a bit of money and make a site that will help them (personal services type of thing) and look nice and that they can change themselves

yes, that’s true. your friend needs to set up an account, not necessarily a wp.com blog with the chosen username. That’s why I used my first sister-in-law’s email and password: so WordPress saw me as her.
