Transfer a domain completely away from wordpress.
-
I transfered my domain name, tkelly.me to 1and1 hosting a while ago with the intenting of letting my wordpress services expire. Now they have expired and my domain name is no longer accessible from 1and1 and it seems that the registration for the domain has been taken back by wordpress. I guess I don’t understand the nuances here since I assumed that a domain transferred to 1and1’s DNS servers would remain registered there.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The domain tkelly.me is registered with WordPress.com and is pointing towards your WordPress.com site, thomasbryce.wordpress.com.
If you’d like to renew this domain, you can do so here:
https://thomasbryce.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades
After you renew, you can learn how to transfer your domain here:
There will be no additional charge.

Yeah, so the issue is that I had already gone through the process of unlocking and changing the name servers of the domain to those provided by 1and1. The domain was already transferred a couple months ago and working well, but it seems that the nameservers were returned to the wordpress ones once my account expired.

Just to provide more context:
I switched the DNS1-4 servers to those provided by 1and1 after unlocking the domain. 1and1 verified that the transfer was successful:
“Dear Thomas Kelly,
We are pleased to inform you that your registrar has made the required
name server entries and your Internet site hosted on 1&1 Internet Inc.
servers is now available through the domain tkelly.me. “At this point I was able to redirect my domain to my own webspace through the 1and1 control panel. Everything was working well until I checked on my domain last week (Nov 2) to find that it redirected me to the wordpress.com expiration page. I had not changed anything and 1and1 emailed me on Nov 4 saying that the DNS nameservers were switched to
“DNS1: ns1.wordpress.com
DNS2: ns3.wordpress.com
DNS3: ns2.wordpress.com
DNS4: not set “I definitely did not switch them and am confused as to how wordpress was able to do it without my consent.

Transferring your domain and changing its name servers are distinct things. Your domain was not transferred from WordPress.com.
At this point, if you’d like to maintain control of tkelly.me, you can renew it here:
https://thomasbryce.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades
Then, as previously stated, you can keep it here, at WordPress.com, and point it to a site you have hosted elsewhere by changing its name servers:
Alternatively, you can transfer it to another registrar with the following instructions:
If I’ve misunderstood the issue, or if you have any other questions, please let me know.
