Transfer a domain to wordpress.com without mapping

Is it possible to transfer an existing domain to wordpress.com without mapping?
Thing is, I’ve been helping someone to transfert website on wordpress.com in order to save hosting and webmaster cost. I don’t see any use in registering the domain at a 3rd party provider + pay wordpress.com for mapping, thus I’d prefer transfer the domain to wordpress, but I don’t see the option, unless the domain isn’t registered yet.

While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. Therefore, we recommend that you keep the name registered at your current registrar. You can use the domain for your site here at WordPress.com by mapping the domain, as explained here:
