Transfer denied

I have been trying to get this domain transferred for several days. Your tech support advised me to change owner contact so that I would receive the confirmation email instead of it being sent to the old owner. I did that. I was not clearly informed that the domain would be locked for 60 days after ownership change. OTHERWISE I WOULD NOT HAVE MADE THAT CHANGE!! I approved the confirmation, and now you send me this email:

‘The transfer you requested has been declined because you opted-in to a transfer lock for 60 days when you agreed to the WordPress.com Change of Registrant policy.

For security reasons, when you change the registrant’s first name, last name, or organization name, you consent to a 60 day lock on transferring the domain name. Because you have provided your consent, Section 3(6) of the ICANN Policy on Transfer of Registration between Registrars permits us to decline your transfer request.

If you feel the lock was initiated in error, you may contact (email visible only to moderators and staff) to request a review.

    Regards,
    Domain Services
    WordPress.com’

I emailed that address and it came back undeliverable.

I do not accept this denial. Why on earth would you do this? Please transfer our domain ASAP. Failure to do so will results in complaints to the Better Business Bureau and ICANN against Wild West, and many. many bad reviews on the internet for wordpress.com hosting. This is absolutely ridiculous how much time and effort I have had to go through for a simple domain transfer.

  • Hi there,

I was not clearly informed that the domain would be locked for 60 days after ownership change.

This is explained on the screen where you update your contact information and was also explaines in the confirmation email sent to the old email address on the domain contact information. The confirmation link sent to the old email address also contained an option to opt out of this lock. If that person did not select the option to opt out of the lock, then the transfer lock is applied.

This entire process is explained here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/update-contact-information/#email-or-name-changes

It works this way because ICANN, the organisation that regulates all top-level domains on the web, decided it should work this way. I realise this is frustrating, but registrars have no choice in the matter. We have to apply this lock if changes are made to the email address, organisation, first name or last name on a domain.

Your one option is to try and update the contact information again, so a new set of confirmation emails are sent out. You should then be able to opt out of the lock via the confirmation link sent to the old (current) email address.

If it does not show you that option it means the lock cannot be lifted at this point, and you won’t be able to transfer the domain for 60 days. In that case you can still map the domain to another hosting provider by changing the name servers or IP address. If you get that information from the new hosting provider I’d be happy to add them to your domain for you, or you can add them yourself via the instructions here:
