Transfer domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to move an existing .com domain name hosted by wordpress to a new site I’ve built on a wordpress.com site. The .com domain is valid and has just been renewed. Someone else was managing the site before me and they set up the original .com domain name.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Which domain are you looking to move, and which site are you trying to move it to (example.wordpress.com)?

    I’m happy to help!

    Hi Chris,

I’ve created a new site at barbaratheatre.wordpress.com. Content layout etc there is what I want to attach the exisiting and correct domain to. That domain is highcountrytheatre.com and is a wordpress site that was created a couple of years ago by a small company my friend was using.

She has recently paid them AUD70 to renew the domain registration. I want that to come with the transfer as well. Plus all the billing details.

I’m not fully tech savvy at all and am paranoid we will lose the new site content during the transfer. I’m sure you can reassure me, but is there any way to duplicate the site just in case? Also to links to fb page etc move across as well?

At the moment she is forwarding the followup post notifications and I am checking for them though the site. Between that and you probably being in another hemisphere, there is likely to be some lag time, so don’t think I’ve disappeared.

Many thanks for your offer to help. I REALLY appreciate it.

    Best wishes, Kristal

PS, the admin person there (who is less tech savvy than me), gave me what her boss said would be a domain key. But she called it a password and it looks like one of those randomly generated passwords we get when we first create a site. Ends in r8+.

    Hi there,

The current host of highcountrytheatre.com isn’t WordPress.com. It’s hosted elsewhere.

I can’t be sure where it’s actually hosted, so I recommend you reach out to the admin. Instead of transferring the domain, you should leave it where it’s registered, and map it to your site here instead.

It only takes a few steps to connect your domain name to your WordPress.com site, and this guide will walk you through it:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Neither of your sites’ data are affected by doing this.

    Hi Chris,

High Country Theatre is definitely a word press site. I am on the users list as an administrator:

    http://www.highcountrytheatre.com/wp/wp-admin/users.php

I think I can map the site but the system wants to charge barbaratheatre $17 and Barbara has just paid a renewal for the HCT domain. The old site is still active and will be until I replace the content with the stuff from barbaratheatre. Plus, I’m struggling to find the domain tab on the HCT site.

    Thanks, Kristal

Weird – under the ‘forms’ tab I found Ninja forms system status which tells me:

    http://www.highcountrytheatre.com/wp

    Under Dashboard tab it days:

WordPress 3.9.1 running High Country Theatre theme.

    Hey there!

Just to confirm what you want to do, you’d like to point this domain – highcountrytheatre.com – to your site here at WordPress.com – https://barbaratheatre.wordpress.com, is that right?

The domain – highcountrytheatre.com – is not registered with us so you’ll need to contact the domain registrar to change the name servers for the domain to ours. According to the public whois page for your domain the registrar is TPP Wholesale Pty Ltd:

    https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=highcountrytheatre.com

    Does that sound familiar?

These are the steps you’ll need to follow to point your domain to WordPress.com:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Let me know if you have any questions! Domains can be very confusing so I’m happy to explain further.

Thanks Rachel, I’ll see how I go with these links and let you know the outcome.

Okay, here’s where I’m up to:
Have contacted the registrar and had the domain name servers changed to
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com
The domain name is now pointing to the right site.

    BUT search engines:
    – still seem to be locating the old site which usually appear with green dots on left
    – aren’t locating the new site readily
    – when they do locate it, it shows up as barbaratheatre.wordpress.com

    How to correct?
We’ve paid the $17 to map the domain…

I just adjusted a URL on the menu page, hopefully that solves it… I’ll get back to you if I need to.

    Sorry about the confusion.

Hi @barbaratheatre, I can see the domain is working correctly with your site now – https://highcountrytheatre.com. Well done!

Regarding Google search results, this can take a little while to change because of Google’s cache. I recommend setting up Webmaster tools for your site to speed things up a bit:
