Transfer domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to transfer a domain I bought thru WordPress and transfer it to my Squarespace site. However, the domain is currently being ‘parked’ by WordPress and i cannot gain the proper access to transfer it. How can I get access back to the domain settings to transfer it?

  • Hi there,

Is this for the domain, tribesocialmarketing.com? That domain is parked, because you cancelled it. Clicking cancel on a domain means you say you don’t want to own it any more, and you cannot transfer what you don’t own.

I can restore the domain to your account, but new domains cannot be transferred for 60 days after registration. This is true for any domain bought at any registrar. So as you only bought the domain yesterday, that means you won’t be able to transfer it until the middle of March.

However, you can leave it registered here and map it to your Squarespace site.

The other option is to wait for the domain to be released again, which should be late next week. Once it’s released you can then register it directly with Squarespace, but anyone else will also be able to register it.

Please let me know how you would like to proceed.

    Hi Kokkieh,

I have the same problem. I asked for my domain to be cancelled and didn’t realize the implications of not owning it for another 60 days and then having the possibility of it being auctioned.
Could you please restore my domain to my account?

The blog I need help with is earthcarewater.wordpress.com

    Thanks!

I’ll reply to you in your own thread.

@earthcarewater, Please refrain from opening additional threads on the same topic or posting into other people’s threads. It makes it much more difficult to track progress on your issue.

~~ @kokkieh- time for me to walk the dog. :)

    @kokkieh

It sounds from your response that the quickest and easiest route would be to leave it registered at WordPress and then map it to SquareSpace. I would be love it if you could help me on how to proceed.

I accidentally canceled the domain not knowing what problem I just created for myself :(

  • The safest is to restore it and map it to Squarespace, yes, and then you can transfer it after 60 days. Waiting for it to be released always carries some risk of losing the domain in the process.

I’ve restored the domain to your account.

You’ll need to add some custom DNS records to the domain to point it to Squarespace. You can find their instructions how to find those records here:

    https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205812378

And our instructions how to add them here:

Point a Domain to an External IP Address

I can also help you add those, but you’ll need to get the verification CNAME record from Squarespace before I can add it for you. The other records are the same for all sites.

So at the earliest I wont be able to link that domain to my Squarespace site for 60 days?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, you can still use the domain by changing its DNS records to squarespace while waiting for the 60 days to pass to transfer the domain to a different registrar. (The 60-day domain transfer freeze is an ICANN regulation.) See the custom DNS record instructions that @kokkieh gave you above to do this.

  • As @justjennifer said, you can do this immediately, but you’ll need to get a CNAME record from Squarespace to verify your domain for them. If you are not sure how to add it based on the instructions I gave above, let me know and I’d be happy to add the different records for you, but you’ll need to give me the CNAME record that you get from Squarespace.
