Transfer domain and Theme customization
-
I need to transfer my domain from GoDaddy to WordPress. Now, my Theme is supposedly a pirate version. I want to purchase the theme, update WordPress version and update a few plugins.
Does anyone know how to proceed? Will I have all the content intact after migration (I have backups) given this dubious theme? Can Additional CSS from the theme be simply copied and pasted after the migration?
In what order shall I do things? Theme purchase->Plugins update->Wordpress update before migration? Many thanks in advance

Hi there!
We’ll be happy to help you with this.
Does anyone know how to proceed? Will I have all the content intact after migration (I have backups) given this dubious theme?
You can transfer your entire site as-is by following the steps below:
- Upgrade to the WordPress.com Business plan. We suggest the Business plan because it lets you use third-party themes and plugins. You can consider other WordPress.com plans if you’re looking for fewer features.
- Follow the instructions here to import your entire WordPress site to WordPress.com.
- Once you’re done, you can connect your domain or transfer it to us, depending on what you’d like.
- Finally, set your domain as the primary address.
You can upgrade to the Business plan using the option below:
In what order shall I do things? Theme purchase->Plugins update->Wordpress update before migration?
I’d say that it’s up to you. It might be better to update WordPress and the plugins to their latest version before you migrate. This will ensure better compatibility after the migration is done.
As for the theme, you can do so after the migration is completed. Again, the order you do these will probably not matter much, but I do recommend updating WordPress and the plugins first.
Can Additional CSS from the theme be simply copied and pasted after the migration?
I’m not familiar with the theme you’re using since it was developed by a third-party theme, so you may need to contact them to find out the details. Generally speaking, if you have custom CSS in the Additional CSS section on your site now, they should technically work if you migrate them.
But the version of the theme you buy may be different than the one that’s active on your site now. And because CSS is very specific, it’s also possible they may not work exactly the same. The theme developers can help you in this regard, so I suggest contacting them after you purchase the theme.
Hope that helps!
