Transfer domain from Automattic, Inc to hostgator
-
I need to transfer my domain 360crystalclean.com from Automattic, Inc. to HostGator, but I’m not sure how to do this. Specifically, I don’t know where to go to unlock the domain or how to get my authorization (EPP) code.
This is urgent for me because it’s my business website, and everything is pending until I complete this transfer. I already tried using WordPress AI support, but unfortunately, it didn’t help.
To be honest, I didn’t even realize Automattic was my registrar — I originally started with WordPress and then set up my hosting in HostGator. Right now, I edit my website using the WordPress free version inside HostGator, but I want to move my domain name fully to HostGator as well.
Could someone please guide me through the steps (or point me to the right place in WordPress.com to unlock my domain and get the EPP/Auth code)?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you,

Hello Rami,
I am sorry to hear that you want to move your domain outside of WordPress.com. If you need any help with your site and want to consider moving it here with us, we’d be happy to assist you!
Meanwhile, you can find the documentation explaining how to unlock and transfer the domain here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/transfer-domain-registration/
Follow these steps to begin the transfer of your domain to a new provider:
- Visit your site’s dashboard.
- Navigate to Upgrades → Domains (or Hosting → Domains if using WP Admin).
- Click the registered domain that you wish to transfer.
- Click the Transfer button on the right side of the screen.
- If you don’t have this option, ensure the domain is owned by you and not by another admin on the site. Only the domain owner can transfer their domain. Usually, this is the user who purchased the domain.
- Under the “Transfer to another registrar” section, click on the toggle option for “Transfer lock on” to disable the transfer lock.
- Click the “Get authorization code” button.
- You will see a banner message at the top of the screen confirming the authorization code has been sent to your email.
- Please allow up to 15 minutes for the email with the code to arrive.
- The code is sent to the email address you have provided in the domain contact details, which may differ from the email address you use for your WordPress.com account.
- If you no longer have access to this email address, follow these instructions to update the contact information for your domain, then resend yourself the code.

Hi Rami,
No worries — I’ve been through this before. Since your domain is registered with Automattic (WordPress.com), you can transfer it to HostGator by following these steps:
- Log in to WordPress.com and go to your Domains page: https://wordpress.com/domains
- Select your domain (360crystalclean.com).
- Look for “Transfer domain” or “Domain settings”. There you can:
- Unlock your domain (domains are locked by default for security).
- Get your EPP/Authorization code — you’ll need this to start the transfer with HostGator.
- Start the transfer on HostGator using the EPP code. Follow HostGator’s instructions to complete the process.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Make sure your domain has been registered for at least 60 days and isn’t in a recent transfer — WordPress.com won’t allow transfers during that period.
- Keep an eye on your email — you’ll get confirmation messages from both WordPress.com and HostGator.
Once you do this, your domain and hosting will be fully managed under HostGator, and your 360 Crystal Clean business website will stay live without interruptions.
Here’s WordPress.com’s official guide too: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/transfer-away/
