transfer domain name to wordpress

    We have a website for a non profit ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Support Group and the hosting fees are due for renewal with a commercial hosting service (not WordPress).

    We want to move the site to wordpress.com and I have created a test blog (downeastals.wordpress.com) under my username to demonstrate what it would look like.

    Now I need to transfer the blog to someone else to manage and I want the new “manager” to have an account named downeastals. But because of the test blog, that username is not available. If I delete the blog, will they they be able to create a username of downeastals? If so, is there any way I can backup the blog before deleting it. The export seems to be only a reference to what’s stored on wordpress

    Question 2. The domain name downeastals.com is currently registered to the group and expires in May. We would like to register that domain name with WordPress, but see no option to renew with WordPress. How do we go about this so that we don’t have to pay registration to one provider and pay a mapping fee to WordPress?

    WordPress.com does not currently accept incoming domain transfers. If you already have a domain and you want to use it with your WordPress.com site, follow the instructions for mapping an existing domain to your WordPress.com blog. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

    downeastals can’t be done – an account name can convert to a blog but a blog name can’t be converted to an account name

    But somewhere in the Dashboard under Users they can change the displayed name so all is not lost on the name

    Don’t delete anything – once a blog is deleted that name is gone forever

    WordPressCOM is not set up to accept incoming domain name registration transfers – so you are stuck having the domain name registered not here

    You must add the username account as an Admin of the blog and then use this process to transfer the blog.
