transfer domain name wordpress.com to wordpress.org

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I would like to transfer my domain name from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. I’ve just bought my domain name on wordpress.com but I realized that I don’t have enough flexibility with wordpress.com so it would be better for my project to be developped on wordpress.org

I don’t want to transfer my blog content (I haven’t posted anything), I just want to be able to use my domain name. How do I do that? Is it true that I can’t change before 60 days? If yes, what other alternative do I have?

    Thanks for the help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello,
As per your query ” I just want to be able to use my domain name. How do I do that? Is it true that I can’t change before 60 days? If yes, what other alternative do I have?”, Unfortunately yes we can not transfer your domain name to a new registrar within the first 60 days after initial registration, or the first 60 days after a transfer. It is a standardised rule/law.

Please refer to the link below for thorough guidance:

  • Hi there,

If you want to use the open source version of WordPress found on WordPress.org you’ll need to sign up for a hosting account with a provider like Bluehost or Pressable. Then you’ll install the WordPress software and point/transfer your domain there.

WordPress.org is just the site where the WordPress software is made. It’s not a hosting or domain provider, so you cannot transfer a domain there.

That said, and as indicated above, no new domain can be transferred from one provider to another for a period of 60 days after registration. This is an ICANN regulation and all domain providers have to adhere to it.

What you can do it point your domain to the hosting provider you’ll use by changing the domain’s name servers. When you sign up for a hosting plan, your hosting provider will tell you which name servers to use, and then you can add that to your domain with us as explained here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/

I see you also bought a Personal Plan from us. You can cancel that from the Purchases page for a partial refund – the domain portion of the plan will not be refunded – but let me know if you run into any problems with that and I’d be happy to cancel it for you from my end instead.

Thank you for your answers! I just want to make sure, If I cancel my plan, I won’t lose my domain name right? Even if I bought the name domain at the same time as my plan?

  • If you want, we can cancel your plan, leave the domain, and refund the difference. Let us know if this is what you’d like to do.

Yes that’s exactly what I want to do!! Cancel the plan and keep the domain! So How do I do that please?

  • I have already done that for you. I’ve canceled the plan and refunded 30€.
You can see the details in https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/billing.

    I hope that helps :)

Ok thank you very much, I still haven’t received the money but I guess it will arrive in a few hours!

  • The refund could take up to ten days to reach you. We’ve released the money to your bank, so now it’s up to them as to when it gets released in to your specific account. You’ll want to follow up with them about any delays.
