Transfer Domain or Domain Mapping

Do I have to either transfer a domain or map the domain when creating the new site? I’m here to evaluate moving the site to a WP site, and just want to build a site with the tools, but not yet publish anything. Can I do these steps later once I’ve had a chance to evaluate?

It’s not necessary to transfer your domain to WordPress.com to create a site. If you upgrade your account to a paid plan, you’ll have a free credit to map your existing domain to the WordPress.com site you created.

If you wish to evaluate the tools and features of WordPress.com, you may first create a free site, set it to private mode and start working on it. And when you’re ready, you may publish it to the public or consider upgrading it to a paid plan to enjoy the domain mapping feature and other paid-plan-only benefits.

Hello Ken, if you wish to keep your domain registered elsewhere (not transferring to WordPress.com), you may perform the domain mapping by following the instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#1-add-domain-mapping.
Your Business Plan upgrade will grant you a free credit to either transfer your domain or to map it with your WordPress.com site.
