transfer domain or map it?

After some reading and light research, it seems best technologically speaking to keep a website, host, and domain separate. I know WordPress offers all three. I already own a domain name from ICANN accredited Namecheap and I’m not sure if I should transfer to WordPress or map it. I want to create a blog and website. What should I do?

The good news is that you can change your mind, and neither decision is permanent. It comes down to which is the better option for you. The site is going to preform the same regardless of which option you choose.

Domain Mapping: This just points your domain to the WordPress.com site that you build here. Your website and domain are then in different places, and you’ll have to renew your domain registration through NameCheap in addition to your annual mapping with WordPress.com. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Domain Transfer: This option would move your domain registration from NameCheap to WordPress.com. Now, all of your stuff is in the same place, it renews 1 x per year at the same time, from the same company, etc… If something goes wrong we can see what’s happening and don’t have to refer you out to a different registrar. The SSL is included with WordPress.com.
