Transfer domain or wait? (and) How to do it?

I currently have a domain .com at GoDaddy. It all ends at the end of December.

I’m sure there is a way to transfer my existing domain to WordPress from GoDaddy. Should I do it before it expires?

Will my registration hold until the end of December and (I assume) I’ll have to renew my .com through WordPress at that time?

Also, are there any (detailed lol) instructions to follow, or someone to contact, on transferring it to WordPress from GoDaddy?

    Thanks!

WordPress.COM is not set up to accept transfers of domain names – you can transfer the registration to another registrar if you want, you can map the domain name to your WordPress.COM blog –

Thanks for replying. So transferring is out. I want to keep it simple and cheap.

I’m still a little confused on what to do.

If I already have my .com, do I still need to pay the $12 Domain Mapping Upgrade?

If it’ll be $12 for domain name + $12 for DMU ($24/yr), then it’d be cheaper to go with WP at $17/yr.
If I did the WP way, how do I get my .com at WP? Do I wait until my .com expires? What can I do?

    Thanks again!

At the present you are stuck at being able to register your domain with WordPress.COM – don’t even think about letting the domain expire and then register it here – all your traffic will be broken while the name is in redemption (can be several weeks) and you might not get the name back – there are people that specialize in buying up expired domains and then either putting their own site on the domain to get the traffic or selling it back to someone for a lot of money.

You can look around and see if there is another registrar that you like that costs less and transfer to them.

From the WordPress.COM charges your base cost would be for the Domain Mapping at $ 12–

Not sure what “DMU” is but if it registration then yes you have that cost somewhere – there are some registrars that are in the $ 6 to $ 10- range.

The domain mapping with an existing domain name is easy – you change the name servers at the registrar then do the domain mapping here – if you have email with your domain then you need to address that, but you can use Google Aps for an email address that maps to your domain name –
