Transfer domain registration from Bluehost to WordPress.com

    Hi,

    Currently my website is hosted with Bluehost and it is about to expire. I would like to transfer the domain registration to WordPress.

    I was given with an instruction from Bluehost Help (https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/transferaway). According to the instruction, it seemed like there should be some settings to made on wordpress.com’s side.

    Perhaps I should purchase wordpress’s premium plan first to make this works?

    I’ve added one year of domain mapping to wordpress.com, but I’m not sure will that help with domain expiring?

    Domain mapping and domain registration are two separate things.

    Currently WordPressdotcom does not currently accept incoming domain transfers. If your domain is registered with a different domain registrar, you need to renew your domain with them.

    Do not let your domain registration expire if you are using that domain.

    If you need to transfer your domain registration to a different accredited registrar, you will have to do that directly after locating a new accredited domain registrar.

    Hi justjennifer,

    Thanks for your reply, no wonder I couldn’t find any info regarding my question.

    Something I couldn’t understand is that under domain mapping, why do I need to change DNS settings? The problem with changing DNS settings is that once I changed it, the photo URL doesn’t work anymore. It says 404 file not found.

    http://www.thetwoloops.com/ – is not hosted on WordPress.COM – it is a WordPress.ORG install – and as such domain mapping is wasted unless you are planning on transferring the contents of .thetwoloops.com/ to a blog here

    I will flag this for the staff if you need help with a refund or have other questions

    Hi there,

    I can just confirm what @justjennifer and @auxclass have already said.

    If you don’t plan on moving your site’s content to WordPress.com there is no reason to map your domain here. Domain mapping is not the same thing as transferring a domain.

    You should be able to cancel your mapping upgrade for a full refund here:
    http://wordpress.com/purchases/

    Also note that you will still need to renew your domain registration with Bluehost, whether you’re moving your site here or not, as the domain is registered with them and you will lose it if you don’t renew it there.
