transfer domain to wordpress

I want to transfer existing domain name to wordpress – but am confused about how to go about this. I know about mapping – but of course when I enter the existing domain name I am told it is not available. There is currently a website using the name, I have been sent all the files from the previous designer, who says he will keep the current site up until I am set with the hosting. I have access to the hosting account (everity) – but I am unsure of the order to do this. I want to create a new website in wordpress, using the existing domain name. Look forward to some help.

Hi there,
You can create your new website by logging in to your WordPress.com account, going to the My Sites page, and clicking on “Create Another WordPress.” Alternately, you can go directly to this link:
https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/
When you enter your domain name, you’ll get the message “Sorry, but [your domain name] is already registered as a domain.” (Because you already own that domain name.) However, you’ll also see a button below that saying, “Do you own this domain and want to map it?”
You can click on that button and it will let you create a new website using that domain name. Please note that WordPress.com can’t accept incoming domain name transfers, so you’ll need to keep the domain registered elsewhere and follow our guide to map the domain to your new website.
