Transfer domain to WordPress

Hello,
I recently purchased a domain (not from WordPress) and want to transfer it to WordPress, but each time i click on the Transfer button, it just loads and then nothing happens. Do i need to buy hosting / SSL / a WordPress plan to upload my domain?

Hi there,
There is a process to transferring a domain, and half of it is making sure it is released from your current host. Then, you will be ale to transfer the site over to WordPress.com. For instructions on this entire process, please visit our support page:

As you mention, you do need a paid plan in order to transfer the domain to your WordPress.com site:

One last thing i’d like to ask: Can i design (most of) my website on a free account & domain and then move on to a paid plan & transfer the domain i own?

Hi @diacovici, you can can start free an upgrade later, sure. Just know the free accounts are limited in themes and custom design features. Plus our paid plans get direct support, which can be very helpful with setup.
So many people like to buy their plan, set up their site with help from support, then point their domain. You’re welcome to do that, or just stay on free until you’re ready to go live. Whatever works best for you.
