transfer domain vs map domain (just bought our domain from competitor)

Hello, I’m helping my friend get his webpage started. This isn’t something I do professionally however we own a business and started our webpage years ago so i’m assisting him in getting everything set up. Our first major hiccup was, getting his domain, apparently one of his competitors had purchased his domain so we had issues getting that. Finally we were able to take control of FloridaNativeRoofing.com however the next step i’m having issues with is transferring domain vs mapping? How does this work? Once we took over the domain, we had to renew and pay about $18 through godaddy. We are also finding that the domain is still being forwarded to his competitors web page. My question is; how do we get his domain connected with the word press site we want to build, also how do we stop our domain from being forward to his competitor.

Hi there, for me the domain FloridaNativeRoofing.com is currently parked at GoDaddy. If you are seeing something else, try hard refreshing your browser. https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=FloridaNativeRoofing.com

Where are you going to build your friend’s website? Just so you know, WordPress comes in 2 “flavors”: the fully hosted WordPressdotcom platform (where we are ) and the open source WordPress software that you can download at https://wordpress.org and/or auto-install on web hosting providers like GoDaddy. This support guide explains some of the differences between them: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ and hopefully will help you decide which version best suits your needs.

Because you have only recently taken control of that domain, you won’t be able to transfer the domain until after 60 days have passed. That is an ICANN regulation that can’t be bypassed. In the meantime, you can map the domain instead. You can read more about that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

The only real advantage to transferring a domain to WordPressdotcom is having everything in one place rather than needing to pay both GoDaddy for your domain renewal and WordPressdotcom for your upgrade plan, which you will need in order to map or use your custom domain with a WordPressdotcom site. You can read about the available plans here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plan-features/ and their costs here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Have a read of those support guides and come back to us here if you have any other questions.
