Transfer files to an existing Domain Hosted by Vodien
-
Hi, I have created a free website with WordPress. I already have an existing Domain name hosted by Vodien. I therefore wish to transfer the files from WordPress to Vodien to link with my existing Domain name. WordPress is not allowing us to do this. Can you please explain how we can do this as it is asking us to ‘upgrade’.

Hi there!
Do you want to move your content from WordPress.com to a site you’re hosting with Vodien?
Or do you want your WordPress.com site to use the custom domain you registered with Vodien? If you want to transfer your content, you’d want to follow these steps:
https://wordpress.com/support/export/.
If you want to keep your WordPress.com site but use it with a custom domain, you’d need to upgrade to our paid plan. You can read more about our plans here:
https://wordpress.com/pricing/.
Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.

Hi,
The migration team at Vodien are still unable to transfer all the files over to an
existing Domain that I have with them. Their response was: “they need you to have the All-in-One WP Migration plugin to migrate everything from the wordpress platform that you have used to make sure that all that you have created will be migrated properly”.
Vodien say that I need to upgrade to a paid plan for the WordPress that I used to create my website so that they can migrate from the wordpress platform to your hosting.
Can you please help with the above issue?
Thank you -
Hi there,
To use that plugin, you’ll need to upgrade to our Pro plan. However, that’s not required, as you can use our built-in export tool to generate an export file. Then, all you have to do on your new site is import that file using the official WordPress importer. You can find links to both the export and import guides below.
https://wordpress.com/en/support/export/
https://wordpress.org/support/article/importing-content/#wordpress
Hope that helps!

Still no luck! Vodien have just come back with the following message after I had sent them the export guides you sent me:
“As per our migration team I was advised that the instruction that was provided by WordPress is just downloading the content itself. Because if you will not get their premium it is good as recreating everything from scratch since you will still be the one to install the plugins/themes. Also for the content there is no assurance that it will be all good once it has been downloaded and uploaded to the new server since there is a chance that it will be distorted once it has been uploaded.”
Can you PLEASE help as I have been trying to get this transfer done for many months.”
Kind Regards

Hi Bruce:
If Vodien requires that you use the AIO WP Migration plugin to transfer your site to them, then you would need to upgrade to the Pro plan at this time in order to install the plugin on our end.
Let us know if you have any other questions.
-
Thankyou.
Is this fee a one-off in order to transfer my WordPress files to an existing Domain hosted by Vodien or is it an annual fee even though this is a one-off transfer of files?
Regards
Bruce -
It is an annual fee for a WordPress.com site plan that allows the use of plugins. Though you would be able to cancel it before it renews as you would not need it once your site was moved.
-
Thank you. What is the cost? Can you please send me the link to upgrade.
Kind Regards

Hi there,
You can upgrade using this link and choose WordPress Pro plan.
https://wordpress.com/plans/lakesedgecottage168333644.wordpress.com -
Exactly how much content have you created on the as yet unlaunched https://lakesedgecottage168333644.wordpress.com/ ??
It seems a big cost to purchase a Pro plan when you don’t intend to stay here at WordPress.com and when you could export/import your created content for free (although I think the free site would need to be launched for images to transfer).
Migration plugins do transfer more than just your own content but perhaps it wouldn’t be too big a job to recreate some settings/menu etc?? -
Thank you for your responses.
I agree. $240 just to transfer the files for a static website is not a great investment!
I don’t understand the technical aspects of ‘plugins’ etc and why it is a challenge to migrate WordPress files to Vodien (to my existing Domain name).
How would I recreate settings/menus to avoid this fee?
Thankyou -
@cazsezandbelle2016 not that I’d recommend it necessarily, but we do have a 14 day refund policy.
Still, I think your best bet would be working through the steps here:
https://wordpress.com/support/export/The XML file doesn’t include images, but it does include links to them, and the importer can pull them into the new site.
You may need to make the test site public, just for the transfer, so the images will come through instead of being blocked by your site privacy:
https://wordpress.com/settingsThat’s likely the issue you were having with imports if you were following those steps earlier. If the site is public and you run the import, it should pull in the images for you.
Then you can download and install this theme:
https://wordpress.com/theme/rockfieldNote you’ll need its parent as well:
https://wordpress.com/theme/variaFrom there, any customizations you need to add should be minimal.
Hoping this helps!

Thank you so much for your help. I will pass this on to the migration team at Vodien and see how I go. Fingers crossed!

Hi,
I have now upgraded to the WordPress Pro Plan for $240 so that Vodien can transfer my files from WordPress to the Domain (www.lakesedgecottage.com.au) currently held at Vodien.
I have just received the following email from Vodien. Is someone able to assist as this whole transfer issue has been going on for months…Good day.
I received your migration request of https://lakesedgecottage168333644.wordpress.com/ website to your lakesedgecottage.com.au domain.
MESSAGE FROM WORDPRESS:
We tried to install a All-in-One WP Migration plugin, however, it will show a warning message that your subdomain will be changed to a new one. Please see screenshot below as your reference.
“By installing a plugin the following change will be made to the site: Your subdomain will change from lakesedgecottage168333644.wordpress.com to lakesedgecottage168333644.wpcomstaging.com”
This is the first warning message we encounter previously, even though we already migrated a lot of WordPress website to us. -
Hi there,
The subdomain changing when installing a plugin is normal, and shouldn’t have any effect on your ability to migrate the site using that migration plugin. You can tell the Vodien team they can just proceed with that.
This is the first warning message we encounter previously, even though we already migrated a lot of WordPress website to us.
You could perhaps point out to them that WordPress.com isn’t the same thing as WordPress. WordPress is the open source software made by the community on WordPress.org. WordPress.com is a managed host for that software, and our hosting setup has some features and restrictions that don’t exist in the open source version.
I’m guessing even though they’ve helped migrate many WordPress websites, they probably haven’t done a WordPress.com one before :)

Thank you very much Kokkieh. I will pass your message onto Vodien and hopefully all will go well!
