Transfer followers to new WordPress.org blog

    Hi Happiness Engineers!

I’d need your help to transfer email subscribers from http://alexandria-library.com to the WordPress.org self-hosted blog http://alexandria-translation-resources.com – Jetpack Plugin is up and running.

If you could also move the Stats… that’s be awesome :)

Also, question – I’m considering going for the redirect upgrade so that I keep the domain name I registered via WP.com but that it redirects to the new site. Thing is, I set up a couple email adresses on the Wp.com blog, with forward adresses – will the redirect affect them or can I just keep using them without worrying?

Thanks a lot and have a good weekend,
    Anne

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Ah, other question, sorry, about the redirect upgrade: the current WP.com blog will still exist (unless I delete it), but it won’t show anymore and redirect to the new WP.org one, like a normal redirect, yes?

I made an export > import from the contents of the WP.com site to the WP.org site, including media – with the redirect, do you confirm that the media hosted here on the WP.com blog will still show without any problems on the WP.org site (as long as I don’t delete or make the Wp.com blog private, of course)?

    Thanks! :)

    Hi,

Any update on this? It’s been almost a month now and we’ve been waiting all this time to complete the move of the website, so…

    Thanks,
    Anne

Guys… I really need an answer on this.
If I buy the redirect upgrade, what happens with the email forward I set up on the website?

    Thanks,
    Anne

I am so sorry this thread fell through the cracks. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks timethief. The transfer of subscribers is no hurry anymore – since I’ve been waiting for it to happen, I’ve been putting the move of the domain name on hold and now my developer is on vacation for a month. Which is why I’ll use the redirect upgrade… just need to know whether it will impact or not the email forward set up here (and if yes, what needs to be done to keep the email forward going).

    Hey Anne!

So, if I understand you correctly, you would like the following:

    – alexandria-library.com to stay registered at WordPress.com
    – alexandria-library.com and alexandrialibrarydotcom.wordpress.com to redirect to your self-hosted blog alexandria-translation-resources.com

Is that correct? If so, the Site Redirect option will be the way to go. You’ll just need to purchase the redirect and set the redirect address to alexandria-translation-resources.com.

One note, in order for post URLs to redirect successfully, the URLs between your self-hosted blog and WordPress.com blog will need to match. So, for example, here’s a post on your WordPress.com blog:

    http://alexandria-library.com/2014/03/14/new-in-the-resource-centre-free-download-autosuggest-dictionaries-from-the-european-central-bank-ecb/

Here’s the same post on your self-hosted site:

    http://alexandria-translation-resources.com/new-resource-autosuggest-ecb/

Since the URLs don’t match, any old links from alexandria-library.com will not redirect successfully (they will pull up an error message on alexandria-translation-resources.com). Does that make sense?

The solution would be to make sure all of your post URLs match. To do this, you would need to change the permalink structure on your self-hosted site to the “Day and Name” option under Dashboard -> Settings -> Permalink. If you choose to do this, any links you’ve published for your new blog would not work (since they would have the old permalink structure). It’s really just a matter of whether you care if old links from your WordPress.com posts are automatically redirected to their new location on your self-hosted blog.

Regarding the email forwarding, this will continue to work provided your domain (alexandria-library.com) is pointed to WordPress.com. So, if you change your name servers to point elsewhere or transfer your domain to another registrar, the email forwarding will not work. However, purchasing the Site Redirect upgrade will not affect the current email forwards setup for alexandria-library.com.

I made an export > import from the contents of the WP.com site to the WP.org site, including media – with the redirect, do you confirm that the media hosted here on the WP.com blog will still show without any problems on the WP.org site (as long as I don’t delete or make the Wp.com blog private, of course)?

Did you upload the media as well to your new .org site or just the posts/pages? Judging from the URLs for some of the images on your self-hosted site, it looks like you moved the media files as well. In that scenario, the media is now hosted on your self-hosted blog so it shouldn’t depend on your WordPress.com blog. So, the images should remain intact even if you were to deleted your WordPress.com blog.

Regarding transferring the followers, when you have your domain set up with the new host and have installed the Jetpack plugin, I’ll be happy to do that for you!

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or need clarification on everything above!

    Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for getting back to me :)

So, if I understand you correctly, you would like the following:

    – alexandria-library.com to stay registered at WordPress.com – alexandria-library.com and alexandrialibrarydotcom.wordpress.com to redirect to your self-hosted blog alexandria-translation-resources.com

Is that correct? If so, the Site Redirect option will be the way to go. You’ll just need to purchase the redirect and set the redirect address to alexandria-translation-resources.com.

Thanks a lot – this is exactly it, thanks!

One note, in order for post URLs to redirect successfully, the URLs between your self-hosted blog and WordPress.com blog will need to match

I understand but this should nto be a problem – all posts have been moved to the self-hosted site so the posts on the WP.com site can disappear as far as I’m concerned. I don’t need a redirect for every single post. I just need people to get to http://alexandria-translation-resources.com when they enter http://alexandria-library.com in their browser. They’ll find their way from there, the new website has been up and running for over 2 months now and we had only good feedback about its uder-friendliness and easiness to browse.
I want to keep things as simple as humanly possible for us…

Regarding the email forwarding, this will continue to work provided your domain (alexandria-library.com) is pointed to WordPress.com. So, if you change your name servers to point elsewhere or transfer your domain to another registrar, the email forwarding will not work. However, purchasing the Site Redirect upgrade will not affect the current email forwards setup for alexandria-library.com.

Ok. For now the alexandria-library.com domain remains with you guys. Eventually we may change our name servers but this is where our tech guy will take over so he’ll take care of the email addresses. It’s just that he is unavailable for the next months and I needed a temp solution until we make that move (which is not a emergency if the Site Redirect Upgrade works fine).

So, the images should remain intact even if you were to deleted your WordPress.com blog

I think so – I used the Export function here on Wp.com and imported contents in the WP.org website. Images were still pointing to wp.com, I manually downloaded them and reuploaded them to the new website. Back then when I posted this thread I had not started with this yet but now it’s done. There might be a gfew images that escaped my attention but since I’m not planning to delete the WP.com site, just do a redirect, I don’t see it as a problem right now :)

Regarding transferring the followers, when you have your domain set up with the new host and have installed the Jetpack plugin, I’ll be happy to do that for you!

    Thanks!
All set, since the end of January – Jetpack is installed. I’ll get to purchase the site redirect upgrade now. AFAIC you can proceed with the transfer of subscribers. :)

    Thanks a lot again!

    Hi Anne!

Everything sounds great. I went ahead and migrated your subscribers. You can see your new subscriber page complete with the transferred subscribers here:

    http://wordpress.com/#!/my-stats/?blog=63639090&blog_subscribers&unit=1

The Site Redirect upgrade appears to be working correctly as well.

Please let me know if you have any trouble or any additional questions!
