Transfer from wordpress.org to wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’m thinking about transferring my wordpress.org website to wordpress.com subscribing to a business plan. Could you please answer the following questions to help me decide:
    – Does the business plan include a support that can help to transfer my website without losing my current SEO?
    – Can I upload my current theme (Sahifa) to keep it, or can I choose any other template (from Envato market for example)?
    – With a business plan, can I work with an affiliation platform like NetAffiliation?
    – Can you confirm that I can modify the CSS, and create a landing page using an iframe from a business partner?
Thank you so much for all these answers!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey emmanuellelabbe,

We’re excited that you are thinking about using WordPress.com.

    Let me answer your questions.

    1. Only a staff member can tell you if such service is available.
    2. Yes, you can use any third-party theme when having a Business Plan.
    3. Yes, you can use the affiliate networks and the third-party ad networks like Google AdSense.
    4. Though you can’t have the access to the theme files but you will have the option to add Custom CSS to change the design of the website and you can create landing pages using the page builder plugins.

Please check what Business Plans offers.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/business-plan/

I would like to mention a few things.

    1. You will get the 24/7 support from the Happiness Engineers to solve your problems. Whether it’s related to any issue or adding Custom CSS, every problem will get solved.
    2. To maintain a safe environment, WordPress.com doesn’t allow a few third-party plugins.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/adding-plugins/#incompatible-plugins

The rest, a staff member can confirm.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you Ravi, it helps.
Of course the blod I need help with is not the one that has been automatically added at the end of my message (an old test), it is the following: http://devenirbilingue.com/

The first point being the most important to decide if I should transfer my blog to wordpress.com, how can I contact a staff member to get his answer?
    Thanks again.

  • I have added modlook tag to this thread for the attention of the staff members. Please wait while someone from the staff gets back to you on this.

FYI, How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question?

  • The short answer is no, not as far as SEO. We can help the export and import of your old content and give some general advice on SEO best practices. But we do not claim to offer SEO services.

That said, if you are keeping your domain and content generally the same, moving to a new webhost should not affect your SEO much, if at all.

Thank you Josh. Then, the only thing that I don’t see in WP.com business plan is email hosting, do you confirm that I must keep an independent hosting for my (email visible only to moderators and staff) ? Is there anything else I should think about to prepare the migration from WP.org to WP.com ?
    Thank you.

  • If you have a domain connected to your site we offer email forwarding – you can create an email address @yourdomain which then redirects to another email address you own. But it’s limited – for example, not all email providers will allow to to set up an alias to send emails FROM the forwarding address, most notably Gmail.

So if you want a fully-functional inbox for your domain’s email, you’ll need to set up email hosting separately. You can purchase Gmail’s G Suite service directly from us, though Office 365 and Zoho (a free option) are also popular. You can see information on the various options here:

    Add Email to Your Domain

Is there anything else I should think about to prepare the migration from WP.org to WP.com ?

One thing to keep in mind is that your current site will go offline the moment you point your domain to us, so you’ll need to migrate your content before you do that. But at the same time, you will need a domain connected to the site before you’ll be able to install any plugins or themes on our end. If needed we can help you do this with a temporary domain, but for that it’s best that you contact live chat support after you’ve bought the Business Plan so we can help you with that there.

If you are using plugins on your site which you’d like to keep using here, and I see you already use a third party theme, you might also want to consider using a plugin like All In One WP Migration to migrate your site, rather than manually exporting and importing. If you’d like to go this route, also please contact us via live chat after buying the plan so we can guide you through the process.

You can find a general guide on migrating a self-hosted site to us here:

Thank you, I think I’ll subscribe to the Business Plan and migrate my website. Could you please answer the following to make sure I understand the Premium support:
    – do themes like Extra from Elegant Theme or Newsmag from TagDiv work fine with WP.com?
    – how far can you help to customize these themes? what are your limits, could you give examples for a non-tech person as I am?!
    – we are 2 users working on the website, can both of us work on my wordpress account and request help with my Business Plan support? Do we work on the same WP console?
    – will my website URL be an https ?
    – do you provide advice related to SEO basics, for example SEMRush currently tells me that he cannot find my Robots.txt file. Can it happen with a WP.com website and would you help fix this issue?
    – I understand that Google Analytics can be linked to a WP.com website (on a Business Plan). Does this mean that we can use Google Search Console or Google Tag Manager?
Thank you so much for your help.

  • – do themes like Extra from Elegant Theme or Newsmag from TagDiv work fine with WP.com?

They should, provided they don’t have known conflicts with the Jetpack plugin – Jetpack is installed by default on all Business Plan sites and cannot be deactivated. If you find a theme you want to use does not work here at all, we do offer a 30 day refund on all our plans, should that mean you need to go somewhere else.

    – how far can you help to customize these themes? what are your limits, could you give examples for a non-tech person as I am?!

That entirely depends on what you want. For appearance tweaks using custom CSS (making something bigger or smaller, changing colours, tweaking positioning) you can get help via email and live chat, and we will do our best to help you set up the theme based on the theme developer’s instructions. In some cases we’ll need to send you to the theme shop where you got the theme for help, though, and we can’t help with changes to the code of the theme itself.

    – we are 2 users working on the website, can both of us work on my wordpress account and request help with my Business Plan support? Do we work on the same WP console?

As long as the other user has been added as an admin on your site, they’ll have full access to the dashboard just like you, including the ability to install and delete plugins and themes, and will have access to live chat support. An admin can do anything on the site short of cancelling upgrades you bought from us, so make sure you trust this person :)

    – will my website URL be an https ?

We issue SSL certificates for all sites hosted on WordPress.com, regardless of plan, yes, so your site will load over a secure connection.

    – do you provide advice related to SEO basics, for example SEMRush currently tells me that he cannot find my Robots.txt file. Can it happen with a WP.com website and would you help fix this issue?

The Jetpack plugin on your site includes all basic SEO configuration you need, and we have a complete guide on how to fine tune those settings using both our tools, or a more advanced SEO plugin like Yoast SEO here:

    WordPress.com Business SEO

You can also refer to https://en.support.wordpress.com/seo/ for more info on this, and we’re happy to also answer any questions you might still have via live chat.

    – I understand that Google Analytics can be linked to a WP.com website (on a Business Plan). Does this mean that we can use Google Search Console or Google Tag Manager?

You can use Google Search Console even with a free WordPress.com site. Instructions for verifying your site there is in the guide I linked to above.

And you’ll be able to use the Tag Manager plugin for WordPress on the Business Plan. We don’t have any documentation on that, but here is an article with some good information if you want to use that:
