Transfer hosting
-
I want to build a website on wordpress.com but don’t want to cancel my hosting company until I get it built.
Also do I need to transfer my domain name to wordpress.com? How much does this cost. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No, you don’t NEED to transfer your domain name until everything is up and running the way you want. Just register a URL of the form whatever.wordpress.com and then when and if you want to transfer the domain, buy the domain mapping upgrade for $13 a year.

Please read this entry so you are clear on the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thanks Raincoaster for that explanation. I’ve just been reading and reading so much the last couple of days I was exhausted and couldn’t think straight.
I’ve read that Timethief and thanks. -

You’re welcome but do know that I cannot see any advantage when it comes to starting a blog here with the intention of moving to a WordPress.ORG install. Any work your do on any theme licensed to be used here and coded to run on our software will have to do done again because our themes cannot be exported and run on WordPress.ORG installs. -
I think I misstated my subject line. I’m planning on staying at WordPress.com and cancel my other hosting company but didn’t want to do it before I had set up my site here so it would stay live until I was ready. Sorry for the confusion.

Aha! Now I understand you. As you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
NOTE: WordPress.com does not provide an email service for domains. See here for adding email http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/
