Transfer my domain name to WordPress, and open a WordPress account.

    I would like to open a WordPress account, so that I can have a website and blogsite that I can manipulate myself. I can’t manipulate my present website, but must rely on my website designer to do it. Is it possible to transfer my old domain name to WordPress? My site designer has sent me the EPP code to facilitate a transfer of the domain name, but before I continue I have a couple of questions: 1) If I transfer my old domain name to WordPress, will I still need to pay my former hosting service to maintain my domain name? (Note that I don’t understand any of the issues involved in this, and do not understand the terminology). 2): Will I end up paying WordPress and my former service as well? I am halfway through the process of opening an account with WordPress, but am hesitating because I don’t understand these issues. (There is a great deal—too much!—information on the WordPress site concerning all these topics, but it’s a blizzard of unfamiliar terms and complicated procedures that simply adds to the confusion).

    I would like to open a WordPress account, so that I can have a website and blogsite that I can manipulate myself.

    Once you have a created a WordPress.com site, you will be able to add and manage content, choose a theme and make certain customisations. It’s best not to cancel your existing site until the content has been imported here.

    1) If I transfer my old domain name to WordPress, will I still need to pay my former hosting service to maintain my domain name?

    We don’t currently accept incoming domain transfers so you would need to ‘connect’ the domain to your WordPress.com site with domain mapping:

    2): Will I end up paying WordPress and my former service as well?

    Yes, there will be two costs:

    1. Domain renewal through your current registrar — unless a domain is registered through us, renewal is not included in the plan cost.
    2. The plan cost which includes domain mapping.
