Transfer my free blog to HostGator?

  How do I unlock my domain and get an exp code? I clicked on the question “How do I get my EPP code?” But my screen in WordPress under domains does not give me the same options listed in that linked article.

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  You can export the content of your site (3 posts) to another host. You can’t take the free domain address or theme with you though.

  I should have added that you can install the .org version of your theme at your new host. See https://wordpress.com/theme/independent-publisher-2 and scroll to the very bottom.

  Thanks magic robot. Dont I have to unlock the domain and get the EPP that HostGator is asking for before I export the content?

  You’ll have to create a new domain address for your new site at Hostgator. Free WordPress.com subdomain addresses such as .tech.blog only work on WordPress.com servers and can’t be transferred elsewhere.

  I purchased a domain name that I have not attached to my free WordPress blog. HostGator told me they can attach my purchased domain name and transfer it for me, but I have to figure out how to unlock the domain name and get the EPP code. Are you saying I have to attach my purchased domain name to my free WordPress blog before I can unlock it and get an EPP code?

  You’d transfer the domain name through your current domain registrar, not us. (you do not current have any domains registered with us)

  What is the domain you’re trying to transfer?

  That is the free blog address provided by WordPress.com. You cannot transfer that address, only paid custom domains.

  Thank you darnelldibbles. That’s what I was wondering. If I buy a domain from someone other than WordPress, then can I transfer the content of my blog to another host?

  Correct, if you purchase a custom domain with any host, you can eventually transfer it to another host (after 60 days or registration).
