  With mapping, the domain remains registered with your current provider. This process creates a connection between the domain and WordPress.com — the domain will still need to renewed through your current provider each year in addition to your WordPress.com plan:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

  Transferring the domain to WordPress.com means it will be registered and renewed through us each year. This option is better if you want to manage the site and domain through one account:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

  Custom domains are a feature of paid plans, so you would need one regardless of which option you chose.
