Transfer or connect domain?

  Which do you recommend, transfer or connect a domain for a new account?

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  Hi there,

  First let me clarify that either option will give you a site on WordPress.com with a custom address (i.e. it will not have “wordpress.com” in the URL) so the primary reason is one of convenience.

  Some site owners find it more convenient to transfer their domain to us directly, so that come renewal time they don’t have to remember to renew the domain with a separate company. For them it makes sense to have all the billing be here with WordPress for the sake of simplicity.

  For other site owners that’s not a big deal. Maybe you have several domains you manage with one company, and it makes sense to keep them all together in one place. In that event I agree it makes the most sense to manage your domains where they are, and simply “connect” the domain to the site you have here with us, so it has a custom address.

  I’ll add that if you purchase the yearly (not monthly) option for any of our plans, your domain transfer is free and we also add a free year of registration (once it gets here) so that can be a nice savings if you are thinking of transferring.
