Hi there!
To clear up any further confusion, there is WordPress.com and WordPress.org, and they are two different entities.
We, WordPress.com, are a cloud-based platform where we manage WordPress sites, whereas WordPress.org is stand-alone software that you can download and self-host with any other hosting.
You can find more details about WordPress.com and WordPress.org on this support page:
https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
That said, if you purchased hosting elsewhere and you were advised to download WordPress, you’ll want to go to WordPress.org.
If you only registered the domain and if you purchased one of our paid plans, you can use that domain as your primary address for your WordPress.com site.
You can either map it – your domain will stay with the current registrar and you’ll need to go to their site to manage anything domain related.
Or you can transfer the domain to WordPress.com and we’ll be your new registrar. This way you’ll manage everything from one place and you’ll be able to reach support with any domain related-issues :)
