    Hi there,

    You have the option to do both.

    1. You can either connect/map your domain to the WordPress.com server.
    (It needs a little technicality in terms of changing the nameservers of your domain to point it towards the WordPress.com servers) – Official Domain Mapping Link).

    2. You can transfer your domain to WordPress.com and by default, your domain will be linked with your WordPress.com servers. There is no need to change Nameservers like the previous option.

    (Official Domain Transfer to WordPress.com link
    )

    You can choose either way and both work fine. But, first, you would need to purchase a paid plan at WordPress.com. (https://wordpress.com/pricing/)

    Every plan comes with a Custom domain free (which means for the 1st year you do not need to pay for the domain. Even if you are connecting the domain from another source to WordPress.com servers via mapping, you still do not need to pay for the mapping in the 1st year.

    Hope that clears the doubt for you. I am tagging “modlook” to your question so that one of the WordPress.com support staffs can guide you if you have any further questions regarding plan purchase or domain mapping.

    Regards
    Deb

    do you have any further questions? Personally, I’d recommend keeping your domain and hosting with the same provider when you can, but that’s more a matter of simplicity when it comes to billing.

    The transfer itself would take a few days and would add one year to your registration.

    Let us know if you have more questions on this.
