Transfer or map my domains?
-
I have a couple of domain names that are registered through the internet company of a trusted ex-work colleague. Because he’s been so helpful, I’d rather not cause any issues between us by taking away my business from him unnecessarily, but I want to build a Word Press website on one immediately (with the second to follow later) myself rather than pay him to do it. He’s happy about that, but can anyone advise whether it would be of any disadvantage to me if I mapped the domains rather than transferred them?

Hi there!
Whether you decide to map the domains versus transfer them depends on how you’d like to manage them moving forward. An advantage of transferring them is that they can all be managed in one place (here at WordPress.com) without needing to pay a separate registrar for it. You can read more about the process of transferring a domain to us here.
With mapping, you can use your domain here without an additional charge on our end, but you will need to continue paying your registrar for its registration. If you decide to map your domain, these are the steps that you would want to follow.
Feel free to let us know if you have more questions about that process.
