Transfer or point blog posts from a .com to wordpress

Previously, I bought a domain name from Go Daddy, and now I have stopped paying for the domain name.
I purchased a hosting server separately on Host Gator and I believe my information (blog posts) is still in the server.

I want to have the same information and layout back into WordPress (i created the website using WordPress). Should I
    1. backup the data and try to upload in WordPress? I have tried this option but I am stuck. I cannot find a way to upload the information
    2. use FTP
    3. somehow point my old website data to wordpress?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

If you would like to move your site from a self-hosted WordPress site (such as a site hosted by Host Gator) to WordPress.com you will want to follow this guide:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

For security reasons we do not support FTP access to our servers. However you will be able to import an XML file from your current site to WordPress.com.

Note, you will want to have the self-hosted version of WordPress to be live on your server before starting the import as this will allow the import file to grab the images.
