Transfer site or Connect site

    Hi, My name is Gregory.
    I registered my domain with google and used google sites to create my website but I would like to transfer it to a word press website for better in depth creation and seo tools.

    I understand that it is easier to manage a website and a domain from one place but what are the draw backs to leaving my domain registered with google and managing the website through WordPress by connecting it using wordpress’s connect option instead of transferring?

    Wordpress website is saying my website isn’t available to transfer due to a transfer lock at the registry anyways, but If it is better to transfer instead of connect would you be able to walk me through the steps of unlocking the transfer at the registry?

    Hi Gregory! I would say it’s very much up to your personal preference whether you choose to transfer or connect your domain here on WordPress.com. While our plans offer a free domain registration (which can also be used for transfer) within the first year, the domain then does become a separate cost to the plan when it comes to renewal. We do have a list of the costs of domain renewals too for reference:

    With regards to transferring the domain, do you know if the domain is less than 60 days old? If that’s the case, then you’d need to wait for the domain to be a minimum of 60 days old before it can be unlocked for transfer; this is a rule put in place by ICANN (the authority for domain names, https://icann.org/) and it applies across registrars.

    What sort of site is it; and is there anything else you’d want to do with the site? We’re happy to point you in the right direction with regards to the plans we offer; feel free to let us know what your current setup is like!

    It’s also worth bearing in mind that when you transfer a domain, that doesn’t also transfer the content of your site as they’re not intrinsically linked as such. If you’d want to import your content too, it might be worth actually working on the content first, before making any changes to the domain:
